NASA Research Suggests Mars Once Had More Water Than Earth’s Arctic Ocean

.

Welcome back My Dear Shoevians to The Other Shoe. Today marks the beginning of my third week back at; researching, writing, editing and publishing here at The Other Shoe. That is an important milestone for me, as just a few months ago (about mid-way through my chemotherapy treatments) I wondered if I would ever return to writing and publishing again. Well, not at all, what I mean is I doubted that I would ever again publish on a regular schedule again. Now, here I am two weeks past and over a dozen articles under my belt since my The Rebirth and Re-Launch of The Other Shoe article of April 13th, 2015.

.

HoHowever, don’t let me take all the credit for that accomplishment. Yes, I research each and every article solo. I track down; images, quotes, facts and data by myself. I download images and document their source for footnotes. I write every single word of every article you read here at The Other Shoe. Yes I am the only person that combines the; images, quotes, data, footnotes and writing into the article you read here today, and every day. Yet, that it is not all there is to the production of my blog, and the articles you view and read. For every; image, quote, data point, researched topic and footnote there is someone behind me keeping my going.

.

Allen. Allen has been the person who if I have written that day it was Allen that prepared my meal and helped me eat. If I took a bath Allen helped me get that bath and get dressed afterwards. If I went to a doctor’s appointment it was Allen that helped me get dressed, get into my power chair, get on to the Para-transit, sat with me in the waiting room, went into the doctor’s office with me, got me home, and back into bed. Without his help and assistance… NONE of this could be possible.

.

I mention this because this same partnership is happening each and every day 140,000,000 miles away, Mars. For the very first time in human history mankind (America) has three spacecraft coordinating efforts for the exploration of Mars. For those of you that have joined The Other Shoe as Shoevians in just the past few months, you are only familiar with the images and efforts of the rover Curiosity. However, Curiosity is but one player in the team that is the Mars Exploration Triad. (Don’t go Googling that title, because you won’t find it anywhere else but here… as I just made it up right now… here, for you My Dear Shoevians)

.

Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter

Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter

[2]

(Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter)

.

First, and most importantly as it coordinates efforts of the two rovers and takes all the images we see from above the Martian surface. The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter was launched November 5th, 2013 (that would have been my eldest brother Ken’s 66th birthday) and has been in orbit of the Martian surface since September 24th, 2014. This orbiting watchdog takes all of the images taken from space, in this edition of ‘The Mars Report’ and all others. Without this eye in the sky we would never see either of the orbiters as they trek across the Martian surface. As well, this orbiter provides some incredible and startling images for all of us to view and enjoy. Next, the two rovers that currently trek around the Martian surface.

.

Opportunity Rover

[3]

(Opportunity Rover)

.

Opportunity is the eldest of the two functioning Martian rovers currently providing images and scientific data for NASA/JPL and all of us here on earth. The Mars Exploration Rover (MER) Opportunity was launched July 7th, 2003 and landed on the Martian surface on January 25th, 2004. There were two MERs, Spirit was launched on June 10th, 2003 and landed on the Martian surface on January 4th, 2004. Currently we Opportunity is the only remaining operating rover of this twin launched rovers. Spirit was lost to us in 2010.

.

Curiosity Rover

[4]

(Curiosity Rover)

.

Curiosity is the final member of our Mars Exploration Triad. The youngest member of the group, but the most familiar to all of you, My Dear Shoevians, that have just arrived or just started reading ‘The Mars Report’ within the last year. This article series was first started to track and follow the twins, Spirit and Opportunity. It has just been in the last year or so that I have made the images and exploits of Curiosity the major focus of this article series. Today, I have images from all THREE of these incredible inventions. To me, these spacecraft are a symbol of what mankind… … … moreover what AMERICA can do if we put our money where it belongs and our hearts and minds behind a genuine goal.

.

Now I will share with you for the reason for the lengthy lead-in and explanation of the Mars Exploration Triad. In today’s edition I will be sharing with you, My Dear Shoevians, images from all three sources! This is unique in the history of this article series, and the real reason for the lengthy lead-in. That and I had told Allen that I would mention him in an article this week. He didn’t believe me, so I have just won a bet! J

.

With everything ‘explained’ and (while writing this article so far) all images for this edition uploaded to the two web sites, I am prepared to share with you, My Dear Shoevians, the nine other images that make up today’s edition of ‘The Mars Report’.

.

That’s right, there will be twelve images contained in this week’s edition of this article series. That is a record number, since my return to publication. Quite honestly, there should/could have been twice as many… it’s just the twenty-odd images was going to be a lot more work and wouldn’t have finished until way after midnight. Even though I have paired down the number of images, for this edition, I assure you that this edition is one of the longest with the most images in the history of ‘The Mars Report’. So, sit back, have something nice to drink, and enjoy!

.

Opportunity rover’s Progress Toward Spirit of St. Louis Crater

[5]

(Opportunity rover’s Progress Toward Spirit of St. Louis Crater)

.

Our first image of this edition, above, shows the progress of the Opportunity rover towards the ‘Spirit of St. Louis Crater’. The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter took the images on March 23rd, 2015. I have chosen to share this image, and make it first, for two reasons. First, I am just amazed at how far Opportunity has trekked since its arrival eleven years four months ago. Second, it shows the arrival of the Opportunity rover to the area that is the subject of the next three images. See, my Dear Shoevians, how that works? I am using the orbiter to show the arrival of the rover to the area, and then I switch down to a terrestrial view and show what the rover sees once it has arrived! J

.

As indicated above, the rover Opportunity has just recently arrived at the Spirit of St. Louis Crater. Upon arrival scientists spotted a ‘Rock Spire’ in the middle of the crater. This is a unique situation so the scientists at NASA/JPL took a large amount of images, for future study back here on earth. I have sifted through all the images, deciding to share with you, My Dear Shoevians, the best three images. They are, in order of appearance; a true color image of the rock spire. That is the image directly below this narrative. ‘Real color’ means that the image has not been altered in any way to improve of change the image. If you, My Dear Shoevian, were to arrive on Mars and look at this spire, this is how it would appear to you, outside your space suit.

.

Before continuing, I would like to take this opportunity to explain a little something to all of you, My Dear Shoevians. As most of you are aware, I publish this blog at two different locations. One at Blog Dot Com, and the other located at Word Press. I understand that each blog has its own followers, and I would not want to try and force people to view and read anywhere they are not comfortable. However, I feel compelled to point out one Fact. Here at Blog Dot Com the images are reduced to fit the page, when you click on them nothing happens. NOW, conversely at the Word Press location that is different! There, when you click on an image you arrive at a page with just the image in its original resolution! That means little, except for ‘The Mars Report’ and ‘Lost in Space’! If you would like to see these images in their full resolution and glory? I would hope over to the Word Press location and check them out. (www.theothersshoe.wordpress.com )

.

[7]

(Rock Spire in ‘Spirit of St. Louis Crater’ on Mars (Stereo))

.

Above, is the very same image only this one was taken by two different camera aboard Opportunity. One of the images was taken by the right navcam, the other taken from the left navcam. One image was tinted with blue, the other was tented with red. If you place one of the old ‘Red/Blue – 3D Glasses’ on, this image would appear three dimensional! NASA/JPL use this process often, many times to help to determine distances to objects and to improve depth of field. Also, it looks really cool!

.

Rock Spire in ‘Spirit of St. Louis Crater’ on Mars (False Color)

[8]

(Rock Spire in ‘Spirit of St. Louis Crater’ on Mars (False Color))

.

The term “False Color’ indicates that NASA/JPL have used a color shift on the image. They do this to show people just how the feature (in this case the rock spire) would look if it were on earth. If Mars had our atmosphere, or this geologic feature appeared on earth, this is how it would look. Whereas, I really enjoy looking at the images form Mars in their original state. Often, as in this case, I much prefer viewing the geologic feature in this ‘False Color’ treatment. In this case, I am able to discern more detail in the image.

.

[9]

(Mars ‘Marathon Valley’ Overlook (False Color))

.

When I saw the image, above, today while researching this article I was awestruck. This is exactly the kind of extraterrestrial view I have wanted to see, first hand, since I was a young boy. Reading science fiction novels, following the ‘Space Race’ and the many missions leading up to Apollo then when we finally landed on the moon. All the while I had images in my head, of these foreign lands and their panoramic views, exactly like the one I have just shared. This is the final image from the rover Opportunity, in this edition. Can you image standing beside Opportunity and taking in this view? I would never want to leave. I would want to build my home right on this spot!

.

.

The image, above, was taken by the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. You can just make out the dark sandy dunes mid-field of the left side of the image. Surrounding the dunes are layers of the Martian surface, likely exposed by a meteor strike thousands of years ago. The right side of the image shows the craggy surface that is prominent in this part of Mars. This image uses the false color process, displaying the features in earth light.

.

Frosty Slopes on Mars

[11]

.

The image, above, was taken November 30th, 2014 by the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. (See a pattern developing, yet?) The featured area was about 1 mile by 2 miles in size, and yes that is frost in gullies on the Martian surface! Can you imagine going to Mars for a ski vacation? Who knows, one-day mankind just may be able to do just that! It takes my imagination for a frosty adventure!

.

Well, so far My Dear Shoevians we have enjoyed many images from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter and from the senior rover Opportunity. Now, as we reach the end of this edition I shift my focus to the last member of our triad Curiosity. As with our visual adventure so far, we will begin sharing Curiosity’s images by taking a birds-eye-view.

.

Mars Orbiter Views Curiosity Rover in 'Artist's Drive'

[12]

(Mars Orbiter Views Curiosity Rover in ‘Artist’s Drive’)

.

As we wrap up this edition of ‘The Mars Report’ the Martian rover Curiosity approaches Artist’s Drive. Having past Pahrump Hills on its way to Logan Pass Curiosity is moments away from breaking the ten-kilometer mark. This is yet another step to the summit of Mount Sharp, the ultimate goal for the beginning of Curiosity’s adventure on Mars. My Dear Shoevians, I just cannot put into words how much I enjoy the combining the view of the Orbiter, with the images taken by our rovers. Never before, in the history of space exploration, have we enjoyed this mulit-viewed approach to extraterrestrial exploration. We will never go back.

.

Curiosity View Ahead Through 'Artist's Drive

[13]

(Curiosity View Ahead Through ‘Artist’s Drive)

.

With that, My Dear Shoevians, I bring you the very last image of this edition of ‘The Mars Report’. As we began, we end with an image taken by the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera aboard NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. Taken from miles above the surface I am still just amazed at the level of detail I see in these images. The following image shows gullies. Now, I understand… many of you are saying “pictures of gullies? I am supposed to get excited about pictures of gullies on Mars?” YES!

.

Yes, when you consider that these gullies are created by carbon dioxide frost on the frozen and barren landscape of Mars! Unlike here on Earth these gullies are not formed over years, and made by flowing water. These gullies are hundreds of feet thick and are formed in a matter of days! They were formed by carbon dioxide gas brought to freezing at -109ºF and forming frost flows! Now that is exciting!

.

[14]

(Changes Near Downhill End of a Martian Gully)

.

That brings us to the end of this extended edition of ‘The Mars Report’. Yes, you may not have noticed but this edition has fourteen images and stretches to a total of fifteen pages. That is, roughly, twice the length of the average edition of ‘The Mars Report’. I hope that you, My Dear Shoevians, have enjoyed this expanded edition and remember to Share this article through your social media. What better way to show your friends you know where to find great reading, than to share this article!

.

Have a great Monday, and a great week!

.

Thank you!

.

Adieu!

Returning to The Other Shoe

Danny Rolling Hills Estates - November 2014

Danny Rolling Hills Estates – November 2014

.

Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. It has been three weeks since my last publication. Just like the old saying goes; my mind and heart are willing, but the flesh is weak. Today, well it has been a little over two weeks since my last chemo, I am feeling able to write and publish. My next chemo is a week from Wednesday, December 17th. That will be my last chemo, this year.

.

My Dear Readers it has been my intention to get back into the swing of publishing on a regular basis. The (harsh) reality is? I will be unable to meet my previous publication schedule while I am in chemo. Once this round of chemo is complete, I am hopeful that I will be able to return to a regular full schedule of publications. That is barring any unforeseen complications post chemo. I have no intention of abandoning this blog, or my writing, anytime soon.

.

The Martian rover, Curiosity, is still working making new discoveries. Therefore, ‘The Mars Report’ will return and continue. I still enjoy discovering and researching News from Around the World” assuring the continuation of the article series of the same name. I still enjoy PC & console gaming, assuring the continuation of ‘MMORPG’s and YOU!’. Timmy and Archer still live in my heart, and often (still) play in my mind. YES! I hard really hoped to have their first story complete… this year. However, I have continued adding plot lines, character development, and tie-ins for future publications.

.

I can tell you one (SPOILER ALERT!) fact about; Timmy, Archer and Smithville. They (all) will be the setting for a second story… this time set at Christmas! Yes, so you My Dear Readers can see just why I really wanted to finish my first story… so I could start sharing excerpts of the upcoming second book… just in time for Christmas! Not going to tell you, My Dear Readers, anymore than that… don’t want to spoil the end of my current story.

.

This week I hope to write and publish a current edition of ‘The Mars Report’. I have, already, researched Curiosity’s recent endeavors and discoveries and there is a good deal to share and report. As well, I think that (if I am up to it) there will be another edition of ‘News from Around the World’ released later in the week. I have just one appointment, this week, then chemo starts next week.

.

For EVERYONE that keeps dropping by…. EVERYONE that kept visiting and reading? THANK YOU! It is very encouraging to see traffic reports that show… many of you, My Dear Readers, just keep coming and reading and sharing and enjoying The Other Shoe. It is my heartfelt desire to make your visits… worthwhile. To reward all of you, My Dear Readers, for your support and patronage.

.

In closing, I will do my very best to write and publish as much as I am able. Do my very best to publish as often and as regularly as my health and flesh allow. I do miss writing… publishing and seeing the comments and ‘Like’(s) and Shares from all of you, My Dearest Readers. Most of all… I just want to get back to doing that which I can… to continue to contribute… in the only way I have left to me.

.

Adieu!

.

Thank you!

A Week in Review – July 19th 2014

Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. If it is Saturday, it is time for ‘A Week in Review’ at The Other Shoe! First, I am still having problems with my primary blog location at Blog Dot Com. If you go to the site and experience errors, 502, ‘Bad Gateway’, or the like just please refresh the page and it should appear. I am continuing to write and ask for technical support. Next, due to failing health, and the corresponding depression, this week was a little shy on publications.

.

502 - Bad Gateway Error

502 – Bad Gateway Error

.

Including today’s article I will have brought five articles to you, My Dear Readers, in seven days. That is not bad, but it is far from what I am used to bringing to you, and what I expect of myself. Granted, My Dear Readers, that in the past seven days? I have taught myself some of the basics of animation! As you will see, in this review of this week, I have ventured into an all new medium!

.

Starting, this week, I have added animation to The Other Shoe! Granted for right now my work product has been limited to creating logos for one of the most popular article series. Hopefully, in the near future, I will add ‘Sunday Funnies’ that is an animation that I have done all by myself! You see, My Dear Readers, I am always looking for ways to improve the blog, entertain you more, and really make a go of this blog and my writing and publications.

.

Animation has always fascinated me, and today that is just as true as when I was a boy. Now that I have access to a software program, that helps and tutorials, I am finding that the art of animation is not really all that daunting! It is time consuming, most of all. Whereas I can write, and publish, written word in one day? Creating, executing and publishing an animation can take up, and exceeding, a week for just a matter of a few minutes.

.

Finally, I had promised to publish two episodes of ‘The Horror in Smithville’ this week, when I published the ‘Missing Chapters’ on Thursday. I apologize that when push came to shove I was unable to publish the two episodes that I promised. For that I deeply apologize. I will work hard to see if I can make that happen, this week. However, Tuesday I am scheduled to see (at least one) doctor to review the results of the C.T. Scan I had done last week.

.

Honestly, just how much I manage to accomplish will (greatly) depend on if I get ‘Good News’ or ‘Bad News’. Sorry! I do not expect to publish on Tuesday, as getting to my doctor’s appointment(s) usually shoots a whole day. However, I will try to make sure I have more content, for you My Dear Readers, this week. Thank you for your understanding and support through this difficult time.

.

Now, without further adieu I give you ‘A Week in Review’!

.

  • A Week in Review – 500th Articles A Week’s Celebration! : “So I decided to write an edition of ‘A Week in Review’ to cover the week of celebratory articles for the publication of my FIVE HUNDREDTH ARTICLE! Yeah, I am very proud to have reached this milestone in publication. I do not know of many other people that have written and published over five hundred articles… much les in just four short years. IT was my pride that pushed me to write so very much last week. I am pretty certain that the push to publish is the reason for my woes.” I really am hoping that the lower, than expected and ‘normal’, traffic numbers are more to do with the problems with the web site and Blog Dot Com than… with me. I really am pushing myself… writing when I am in pain and working just as hard as my body allows. Granted, the depression has become rather crushing… as of late. However, I am hoping the Tuesday has ‘Good News’ that will chase away these storm clouds and give me a more ‘sunny’ disposition!
  • Daniel Hanning Breaks into an All NEW Medium! : “Over the past several days I have been teaching myself… … … (drum roll, please!) ANIMATION! That’s right, over the past several days I have been working to learn the basics of Animation! I have struggled, over the past several weeks, over just what I could add to The Other Shoe? Add so that I might drive more traffic to my site. The other day I was talking with a good friend and they asked me…” “Danny what can you add to the blog that you ENJOY and might drive more traffic?” ANIMATION! Well, it didn’t happen exactly like that… but it was close! Regardless, here I am presenting (in this article) my work product from a week of; reading, watching tutorial videos, experimenting, and ‘getting my feet wet’ in the world of animation! Already I can tell you, My Dear Readers, animation is something that I will work with… dabble in and play with for the rest of my life! This week, alone, has shown that I can ‘do’ animation, that I enjoy working with animation, and that I will be able to find a way to work it into my articles and publications at The Other Shoe! SCORE!
  • The Mars Report – July 16th 2014 : “Now, for the first share of this edition, we are rapidly approaching the Second Anniversary of Curiosity on the Martian surface. That anniversary will happen on August 6th, 2014. So, we are just a few weeks away from that celebration. Before we get to that day, I thought that I might share a little overview of the First Year of Curiosity on Mars. Below is a video, that NASA/JPL made, that is a great overview of the very first year of Curiosity on the Martian surface.” Well, My Dear Readers, this was an extra-special edition of ‘The Mars Report’! Not only was I able to share the ‘Special’ commemorative video, by NASA/JPL, used to mark/celebrate Curiosity’s First Year on Mars? I was, also, able to share images of Curiosity’s discovery (its first) of a meteorite on Mars! As if that is not enough? I also included the very first complete mapping of the Martian surface by the USGS! This map is the very first of its kind and a real find for me and this blog. Over the next two weeks I am hoping to share a lot more from Curiosity to help celebrate its Second year of exploration on the Martian surface!
  • The Horror in Smithville – The ‘Missing’ Chapters! : “Now today I am not breaking with that publication schedule, but I am shaking things up a little. Today I am going to publish… a missing chapter of ‘The Horror in Smithville’. Missing in that when I, originally, wrote parts two and three I had not yet imagined just how I was going to create the conflict I needed. Since that time I have figured out just how to create the desired effect in my story. That has resulted in me writing two (or more) chapters that, actually, come earlier than we currently find ourselves!” Honestly? My Dear Readers, this is really pretty exciting, for me. I am doing… something that is completely out of the ‘norm’ for a writer, or a publisher. By adding these ‘Missing Chapters’ WHILE we are still enjoying the ride? (We are about half-way through this novel) I am adding; a whole new character… well, rather, promoting a background character to one with his own plot line, character development, and iatrical role in the main story line. This is what I am talking about, I have never witnessed an author actually try something like this… like, ever before! Thing of it is? If this works… is well received, then I have TWO more characters that I would just LOVE to do this same exercise, with. This, for me as a writer and publisher, is really exciting. I hope that everyone that is enjoying ‘The Horror in Smithville’ gets a chance to read ALL of these ’Missing Chapters’!

.

Well, My Dear Readers, that brings us to the end of a very short publication week, and a very long week in reality. Now I need to start getting together had copies of images from my scan, put together the clothes that I will wear, call and order my transportation, and generally get ‘ready’ for my doctor’s visit this Tuesday. From what I was told I will be ‘seeing’ two doctors this Tuesday.

.

I will see my ‘Infectious Disease’ specialist and I will, also, have a visit with my ‘Oncologist’. It is the latter that gives me pause, and the reason I am not sleeping. You know, My Dear Readers, I forgot how writing takes my mind off of these woes! While I have writing I haven’t given as much thought… well, except for writing about it every other paragraph… lol.

.

Anyways, I really hope that I can get the time… make the time to write and publish editions of; ‘Lost in Space’, ‘The Mars Report’, ‘News from Around the World’ (BOY there is no shortage of that right now, eh?), and ‘The Horror in Smithville’ this week. I want you all to know that I am going to do everything that I can to present these regular articles to you, this week.

.

Let me back up, a bit. I added a day of ‘The Horror in Smithville’ for one very good reason. When I got past the thirty or so pages I have ready to publish, I realized that I had totally left out; a character progression, a plot line addition, and a little bit of ‘drity business’ that… well, is very important to the story going ahead. Rather than just bluff my way through and ignore the consequences?

.

I decided it would be best if I did my best to integrate the ‘Missing Chapters’ into my weekly publication schedule. That would give all of you more of the story to read, and give me a way to bring the whole picture to life! It is a great idea, if I say so myself, the problem was I had failed to anticipate my failing health… the problems with the blog… and that irritating little distraction called depression. Lol.

.

My Dear Readers, I will do my best to bring you the two episodes of ‘The Horror in Smithville’ that I have promised. I just know that, once it is published, you will just love what I am adding to the story line. Further, we all get to know another character in Smithville! Well, that brings us to the end of this week’s publications… and the end of the week.

.

I hope that everyone had a great and productive week. I look forward to seeing you, My Dear Readers, here next week! Until then…

.

Adieu!

.

Thank YOU!

A Week in Review – June 21st, 2014

.

Danny Hanning of The Other Shoe - May 6th, 2014

Danny Hanning of The Other Shoe – May 6th, 2014

Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. Today, Saturday, is a great day for all of you, My Dear Readers, to catch up. Catch up on reading all the great articles that I have written, and published, right here at The Other Shoe over the past seven days. I know that a great may of you do not have the ‘free time’ to read my articles (and storied) during the workweek. That is THE reason I (originally) created ‘A Week in Review’ and why (today) I continue to write and publish this weekly review.

.

For my blog, and all of you My Dear Readers, it has been a ‘good’ and productive week. Including this article I have written and published seven articles in seven days. Now, I have read comments that ‘that really isn’t all that much writing…’ Rest assured when I tell you that is a good deal of writing! Not just anyone can sit behind a keyboard and, in just seven days, produce more than seventy pages of; stories, articles; on Space Exploration, Hubble images from far-flung universes, current affairs and international news, political logjams’ and achievements, and a horror story.

.

‘The Horror in Smithville’ (alone) is well over 95 pages in length, 220, 000 characters and 50,000 words. Each, and every, ‘A Week in Review’ is over ten pages long and contains nearly a dozen links to other content. As well, My Dear Readers, it is not just the writing. During the week I research many topics, sift through dozens of images (for ‘Lost in Space’ and ‘The Mars Report’), and work and rework political articles in an effort to be as factually correct as possible and to try to not offend ANY of my readers.

.

Please do not get me ‘wrong’, I am not complaining… I am just explaining. The work I do is very tiring and, more times than not, makes my pain condition worse never better. Yet, I do not know what I would do with my time if I wasn’t working on these articles, stories and reviews. I just love the work I do here at The Other Shoe. The pain I experience, the physical limitations I have and the declining nature of my disease state causes a great deal of depression. I take ‘medications’ for my depression, but the one thing that works better than any/all my anti-depression medications? A single; comment, question, ‘Like’, ‘Share’ and/or ‘Kudos’ on any of the articles I write and publish each week.

.

Every time I go to the primary location for my blog (www.theothershoe.blog.com) and see the counter has gone above 50!?! I am just ecstatic! To think that more than fifty people, in the last week, have come to my blog and looked at or read my work? Makes me feel like I just might be able to make a difference in the world I live in, still! That I might, still, be able to make people laugh! And, to think for just a moment… just a single moment that my words light help another person see and issue through the eyes of another? THAT gives my life new meaning!

.

So, you now have a better idea just why it is I do all this writing and publishing. I want to help to inform and entertain people; family, friends, loved ones and all my followers here at The Other Shoe and Facebook. Yes… and someday…of course… I would just love to have something of my own to be published in a book or magazine! That will always be the dream, My Dear Readers!

.

Now that I have shared a little of what drives me, and keeps me writing and publishing every week. It is time for another edition of ‘A Week in Review’.

  • Notes From Behind the Keyboard – June 16th, 2014: “Yet, today was different. I was extremely panicked upon waking and asked Allen to “turn on the lights… something is wrong!” Much to my chagrin, and Allen’s surprise, when he turned on the lights he discovered that my lips were blue… as was much of my facial complexion. So much so that Allen (usually stoic… almost indifferent) actually gasped when he looked at my face, with the light turned on. Allen then informed me “Danny… I think you stopped breathing. I heard you gasping, again, and I got up to wake you up.” Allen is visibly… shaken; this gave me the chills because Allen just doesn’t show emotions, like, ever.” To this day I have NO idea just what is going on with me at night. Allen has worked every single day since that hospital visit, I hope that soon he can help me get to the doctor I as given a referral. Barring that, I just sleep as light as I can… and (most of the time) sleep with one eye open. Allen is not sleeping very heavy, either. In just the past two nights I have had three bouts of the ‘gasping while sleeping’ and BOTH time Allen awoke quickly and came right over to my bed to check on me! I simply do not know what I would do without Allen. I not only love him more than anyone or anything in the world… I trust him with my very life! This was NOT a good way to start the week… and, looking back, I am really surprised that I manage to finish seven articles in the same week Monday started this way!
  • Lost In Space – Tour of Our Solar System – #2 Venus : “Venus is known as the ‘Sister Planet’ of Earth. This is due to the fact that Venus is closest to Earth in; size, orbit of the sun, gravity and bulk composition. Venus orbits the sun in just 224.7 days. Now, most planets in our solar system rotate, on their axis, in an anti-clockwise direction, also known as a retrograde rotation or ‘orbit’. Further, Venus rotates the slowest of all the planets taking a full 243 Earth Days to complete on rotation. That means that a single day on Venus would last 243 days.” Well, My Dear Readers, this ‘Solar System Tour’ is being very well received by you! It is a lot of work, every week. Sorting through dozens of pages of images, picking which images I think will go best with the article. Downloading the images on to my computer, then resizing the images so they ‘fit’ on the blog page, uploading the images to my blog, then adding them to the text of the article. There is, also, writing of the dozen of so pages of information, news, and background information on each of the planets. However, you would not believe just how much I am LEARNING while I am writing and publishing this ‘Tour of OUR Solar System’! Next week… MARS!
  • The Mars Report – June 18th, 2014 : “On April 18th 2014 Opportunity managed to get some great landscape images of Endeavour Crater Rim from ‘Murray Ridge’. You, My Dear Readers, are very fortunate in that I have downloaded, and am going to share, two different versions of this wonderful landscape image. The difference between the two images is that one (the first) is in ‘True Color’. Meaning, in natural daylight on the Martian surface, the image has been enhanced for better viewing. The second image is done in what is called ‘False Color’. This means that the good people at NASA/JPL have done their best to reproduce the image in ‘Natural Earth Light’. So, if we were to ‘see’ this landscape on Earth, the second image is how it would look here in Earth light.” When I started writing the very first edition of ‘The Mars Report’ (I must admit) I had NO idea that I would still be writing and publishing this series three years later. I started this series with Opportunity and Spirit rovers. Took a bit of a break when Spirit ‘died’, then came back to this series with renewed vigor when Curiosity landed at ‘Bradbury Landing’! Now, each and every week I really look forward to going to the NASA/JPL web site and scouring the site for new and interesting images. Sometimes the number of images are few, but some real science has happened, since the last article. I have a ‘Good Feeling’ about this series, now. I have a feeling that I will be writing and publishing this series when we celebrate the Second 500 articles!
  • Notes from Behind the Keyboard – June 19th, 2014 : “Since my neurosurgeon did not order the correct number of bone graft pieces prior to surgery, one or more bone grafts were not properly prepared prior to implantation into my neck. As seen in follow-up X-Rays the “bone grafts did not fully knit” the my bones. This is the reason that, now, seven years later I still have popping, and grinding sounds coming from my cervical spine, shooting pains in; my upper chest, face, upper left arm, lower left arm, left hand. What this means is that the bone grafts never “completely knit” with the surrounding bone (mine), that the structure is not solid and “durable”.” Long story short? (TOO LATE!) My neurosurgeon underestimated the extend of damage my degenerative disc disease had actually caused to my cervical spine, discs and nerve roots. This caused him to enter the OR less prepared than he need to be, and more overwhelmed by the severity of my condition. Combine that with an untrained vendor representative from the ‘Bone Growth Stimulation’ device and (unknown at the time) a severely diminished level of Vitamin ‘D’ in my blood stream? = Poorly knit bones, unstable construct resulting in spinal stenosis, more nerve root damage and possible growing pressure on my spinal cord. The last neurosurgeon I had a consult with, told me that ‘your condition will, likely, NEVER improve… you will spend the rest of your life on pain medications… you will loose more and more bodily functions until you will be unable to walk, use the bathroom, take a bath or brush your teeth without assistance…” That is NOT my image of what one’s ‘Golden Years’ should be like. I have no choice; I just pray and work hard so that just maybe I will earn enough money to make this terrible future more bearable.
  • The Horror in Smithville – REVIEW – First Eleven Episodes: “Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. I would like to extend a deep and heartfelt “Welcome!” to everyone! To this, the third review of ‘The Horror in Smithville’. Today I am here to present; a short introduction, a little teaser, and a link to all of the First ELEVEN Episodes of this wonderful tale. Now, if you are just now joining the ranks of My Dear Readers, you might not know that this is my very first venture into the genre of horror. I have chosen to make this first, a story for young people. However, from what I am hearing (from many of you, My Dear Readers) is that this tale is enjoyed by adults and young adults, alike.” Twice a month I will publish another review, just like this one. This will enable people ‘new’ to the blog and this story a quick and easy way to catch up with the story. My Dear Readers, HONESTLY… when I started this episodic horror story? I NEVER imaged that so many people, from all over the world, would enjoy it SO much! As well, this story has… GROWN on me. Timmy and Archer have GROWN on me… and this whole story just keep getting bigger and bigger in my mind and in my heart. I am, already, ‘seeing’ more and more books! I can see this one story ending… then US returning to Timmy and Archer just a couple or a few years down the line, for yet another adventure in their alternate world! A couple of things… I am still working on the name of the other world. Two, the Latin in this story is giving me FITS! I have not ‘used’ Latin since High School. I used to be fairly versed in the Latin… not anymore. Just as soon as possible I WILL have all the Latin worked out for the; spells, enchants, and ceremonies. My Dear Readers, I want you to know that I am having a WONDERFUL time bringing this horror story to you, and yours!
  • News From Around the World – June 19th, 2014 : “Now, let us proceed with this edition of “News from Around the World’. Today were are going to drop by L.A., Spain, Washington state, and Washington D.C. for a jaunty romp through the headlines. Every week I rummage through headlines to find some of the stories not covered by the network news, and a new take on some that were. Honestly, there were more stories to cover this week, than I had time to properly prepare the article. So, let’s jump right in and get our feet wet!” This is another article series that I started on a lark, which has managed to work its way into the rotation as a ‘regular’. It was worked its way into my mind and into my heart. This is another way for me to share some of my humanist views, without getting all political. Don’t get me wrong! I very much enjoy politics. However, at this point in time politics is being used all to often to DIVIDE people. Therefore, I am doing my best to address POLICY and leaving POLITICS off to the side! Thank you Kathye Warfiedl Rogers for YOUR input on that, it was instrumental in me finding a way to have a voice on policy without upsetting the people I respect and love! Thank you!
  • The Horror in Smithville – Part TWELVE! : “The adventures of Timmy and Archer are as real, and come from my own personal experiences, as any thing I have ever written. There are moments, several of them, which you will be reading today that were literally taken out of my memories as a young man. As an extra special treat, for everyone out there from Pearland Texas, (and everyone that has known me and my scholastic life) there is a very special ‘Guest Appearance’ in today’s episode by someone we all dearly loved.” It is with GREAT pride that I present to you, My Dear Readers, THIS the 12th episode of my wonderfully entertaining FIRST venture into the Horror Genre; “The Horror in Smithville’! With each and every passing week, I am continually amazed at what situations Timmy and Archer get themselves involved… then, just how they manage to extricate their happy butts! I refuse to tell you anything from this episode! There is just no way I can share… without ruining the suspense and thrills that are this episode. However, I will tell you that I have included (in this episode) a Very Special ‘Guest Appearance’ by someone that everybody knew and respected back in Pearland, Texas. I am very proud that he is making an appearance in this story! I REALLY hope that EVERYONE that I know, from Pearland, makes the time to come and read this episode and see ‘who’ it is that I picked for this Special ‘Guest Appearance’. Thanks!

.

That, My Dear Readers, brings us to the end of another edition of ‘A Week IN Review’ right here at ‘The Other Shoe’! I am thrilled to have managed to write and publish another full week of seven articles in seven days. I really hope that everyone takes the time… makes the time to look over all of these fine works. To; look at the pictures, enjoy the stories, be challenged by the information and view into the lives and worlds of others.

.

Yet, if I had but one wish? I would be to do all this work… and be more comfortable, in less pain, get more sleep, and have the means to enjoy the life I have… left. I refuse to beg for that which would make my life more livable. What little I have I thank God for his kindness in giving. I work just as hard as I possibly can, with the physical and neurological limitations I now experience. I do my best to keep my pain out of mind, and be thankful for every moment of life I have left.

.

If I may? I would please, My Dear Readers, ask (respectfully) would you please ‘SHARE’? Share my work on Facebook. Share my posts on Facebook or My Space or Pinintrest or Tumblr. I do NOT do this out of vanity. Rather I do this because I DO believe that my work… is enjoyable and I have a genuine desire to entertain! As well, the more people my stories reach? The more likely it is that… someday I might be able to help to financially support myself!

.

I am, physically, unable to return to work. As my last neurosurgeon told me and documented? It is completely unlikely that I will ever be able to return to the work force. That my condition will only worsen, and that in the coming years… I will loose more and more physical abilities, and neurological abilities. (I will feel less, have les control over my body) I would just like it if I was in a better financial position… when that happens. I think that any/all Americans would want the same for themselves and their loved ones.

.

My Dear Readers, that brings us to the end of the week, the end of this article, and the end of another full week here at The Other Shoe!

.

Adieu!

.

Thank YOU!

.

A Week in Review – June 7th 2014

Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. Well, it seems for the very first time in many weeks I have written and published enough articles to merit this weekend review! This will come as a surprise to some, and a comfort to others. Myself, I am a big fan of regularity, things happening each and every week like clockwork. My father used to have a saying ‘Consistency is the hobgoblin of small minds.’ Meaning, only people with small minds dislike a world of consistencies, and I agree.

.

As well, this week saw a return of varied and different topics for the articles I published. We had everything from World News to PC Gaming and the return of ‘MMORPGs And YOU!’. Truth be told, that article is likely to see another return either next week or the week after. If you follow me on Facebook (Danny Hanning on Facebook) then you will know that I have updated and returned to ‘SWtOR’ = ‘Star Wars the Old Republic’ the on line MMORPG based on the wonderful intellectual property of Lucas arts. They had added an all new feature to the game, that I think will find wide appeal, and I am going to publish an update to the article (here) to include this all new feature.

.

Well, now I think that is just about enough teasing and spoilers before the actual article. At this point, either you are going to go ahead and read this article, or you have already clicked through to some other destination. So, without further adieu, I bring you ‘A Week in Review’!

.

  • New From Around the World – May 31st, 2014 : “Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. Today is Friday May 31st, 2014, TGiF to everyone! With the first weekend, since my blog disappeared, rapidly approaching I have been searching my brain for just what content might peak interest by you, My Dear Readers. First, I thought of presenting Part TEN of ‘The Horror in Smithville’ for your reading pleasure.” Here is a perfect example of what I was talking about, this article is a double edged sword. I start out talking about social inequalities (from around the world) that have occurred in just the past week, and then I quietly segway into financial inequality. You see, My Dear Readers, I will likely never tire of writing about the grave and widening gap between our (now) ‘Two Class’ system. Gone are the days of the ‘Middle Class’, today you either struggle ‘hand-to-mouth’ making it paycheck to paycheck, or you have so much disposable income you have to buy symbols of ‘vulgar displays of wealth’. In the month of May, Pope Francis had the courage of his convictions to tell the leaders of this world that the time has come for a “legitimate redistribution of wealth”. The Pope has hit the nail on the head, and with one breath has set in motion forces that will, in time, level financial inequality once and for all. Want to know ‘why’ I say that, you will have to read this article.
  • MMORPGS And YOU! – July 1st, 2014 Republication : “Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. Today is Sunday June 1st, 2014 and I have decided to reblog/republish one of my single most popular article series ever. ‘MMORPs And YOU!’ managed to set a new record for the number of ‘Likes’, greatly increased traffic and was one of the very first of my articles to ever be ‘reblogged’ (posted by other blogger to their site). It is taking a little more time to get back into the habit of writing every single day… well, that is only partially true. I am not having any difficulty writing ‘The Horror in Smithville’… I am already done with Part TEN and am working on Part ELEVEN!” As I mentioned in the forward above, more than one MMORPG is seeking to increase membership by adding “all new” features to their games. In this case, World of Warcraft is adding another whole new continent with the upcoming expansion. ‘Warlords of Draenor’ looks to be a wonderful expansion of the world of Azeroth, and the game. Rather than just throw the particulars of the new expansion at You, My Dear readers, I went back and republished two of the previous articles from the series ‘MMORPGS And YOU!’. Take a moment and take a look, it will be time wells spent I assure you!
  • MMORPGs and YOU! – World of Warcraft – Republication : “Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. Today is Sunday June 1st, 2014, and today I am here to share a previously published article. The reason fort his republication is simple, World of Warcraft is about to release another expansion to their game content. Earlier, this year, I published a very well received series of articles titled ‘MMORPGs And YOU!’ right here at The Other Shoe. Having said, I just feel I would remiss if I failed to update you, My Dear Readers, with regard to the newest expansion of content.” This is the second in the triad of articles I published, this week, to help herald the upcoming expansion to ‘World of Warcraft’. This is the article, out of the series, that I devoted just to WoW. It includes several in game screenshots and in game videos, too! Now, My Dear Readers, if you haven’t already read this article, this week, and/or you were not a visitor or Reader when this article was originally published, now would be a great time to check it out!
  • World of Warcraft – Warlords of Draenor : “Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. As promised, I am here today to bring you the scoop on the newest edition to the storied MMORPG franchise, ‘World of Warcraft’! That’s right today you will get a peak at the upcoming expansion ‘Warlords of Draenor’. First, to get a little of the legal mumbo jumbo out of the way, ALL materials shared here are copyright of Blizzard Entertainment and not property of The Other Shoe. That means, I am just here to share what is already readily available at the web site I linked above. I am not to break any news, or share anything new.” Here we are! This is the article, the last of the triad, that is all about the all new expansion to WoW. I share many in game screen shots, a listing of many of the new features and upgrades, and a little of the back story behind the expansion. It is a great read and well worth the time and effort to learn all about the upcoming expansion. ENJOY!
  • The Mars Report – June 4th, 2014 : “Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. It has been more than a week since I wrote, and published, an edition of ‘The Mars Report’. However, today’s edition just could not have come at a better time. For those of us that, daily, look to the stars and dream of living in outer space or another planet? A report from the National Research Council (named ‘Pathways to Exploration: Rationales and Approaches for a U.S. Program of Human Space Exploration’) outlines the genuine necessity of planetary exploration and colonization, a goal, which I have strong, and positive feelings about.” Now, this article is quite a departure for me. This is not the regular edition of ‘The Mars Report’. It does not contain ‘eyecandy’ from the surface of Mars, or science experiments from Curiosity. In this article I review a report, required by Congress paid for my NASA and compiled by the National Research Council. This report is very important to the future of American’s space program, our goal of landing a man on Mars, and the very future and life of our species. If you haven’t guessed it, this article is a ‘Must Read’!
  • The Horror in Smithville – Part TEN : “Now, just as soon as the words “will be taken home early” were spoken the entire student body broke out into cheers and applause. Archer was pretty darn sure that the principal was not finished speaking. Pretty sure that there might have been even more important instructions for the students and the staff. Yet, everything was lost to the din of cheers and applause. Archer had stood up, like everyone else, and was clapping his hands frantically. Timmy, on the other hand, had no energy to get up and stand much less applaud an on coming snow storm. Timmy sat there, quietly, wondering if any of the children applauding right now had done the long math on this situation.” And, with that, you get all you are going to as a preview to this the TENTH episode of ‘The Horror in Smithville’. I am very happy with the following this article has garnered, and very happy with the direction the story is taking… us. Want to know more??? Quite simply, you will just have to read… and enjoy!
  • The Mars Report – June 6th, 2014 : “Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. I apologize for the delay in the publication of this edition of ‘The Mars Report’. I have, yet, to write about it but my health is giving my fits and starts. For three days, this week, I had golf balls under my armpits, and fevers that would come and go within a day. I desperately need to get to my doctors, but I am unable to do so by myself. Anywho, I am here now and I have a pretty incredible edition of ‘The Mars Report” for everyone to read and enjoy.” Now, My Dear Readers, this is the edition of “The Mars Report’ that everyone is used to! This edition contains many new images from the surface of Mars. As well, there is a bit of a surprise in this article. NASA/JPL have crossed a milestone in extraplanatery exploration and I chronicle that achievement in this article. Want to know what happened? Read!

.

With that, My Dear Readers, we come to the end of this weekly review. In this week I managed (in spite of serious health problems) to publish another seven articles. Now, I didn’t take the time to celebrate this milestone… but this week?!?! I published my 475th article!! That’s right four hundred and seventy-five articles in less than five years!

.

I am very proud of this accomplishment, and if I had been feeling better I would have written and celebratory article and posted all over Facebook about the milestone. AS a matter of fact… … later today (Saturday)… I might just go ahead and do just that! It does merit some attention and accolades! So, look out for later today… in a couple of hours, for a special posting on Facebook to celebrate my publication of the 475th article here at ‘The Other Shoe’!

.

Well, MY Dear Readers, that brings us to the end of this week and the end of this article. As always, it has been my honor to bring another seven articles to this blog for your reading pleasure. I hope that everyone enjoys the faire I have wrought, and takes the time to read and enjoy as many and as much of this week’s work as brings you pleasure.

.

I know that not everything I write will appeal to every single reader. As a matter of fact… I am fearful that this week’s ‘News From Around the World’ might rub some of my readers the wrong way. If it has, I sincerely apologize. You see, MY Dear Readers, it is never my intent to offend. It is always my intent to expand intellectual horizons. This is the reason for my blog having articles from many different genres. Most blogs cover one topic, one type of story and have one kind of reader.

.

I wanted more than that, and I wanted readers that enjoyed an ever-expanding realm of understanding. Thirsted for more than a mono-culture. This is my trademark… my hook, as it were. My Dear Readers, thank you for coming by and taking the time to read my work. You do me a great honor, and I hope that I show adequate respect for that honor.

.

Adieu!

.

Thank YOU!

Danny Hanning of The Other Shoe – May 6th, 2014

.

Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. My Dear Readers, I know that I haven’t published in several days, For that, there is a good reason that started Friday afternoon. I only have Allen as any kind of caregiver. As my disease state progresses, this is getting to be a less tenable situation. Case in point, this Friday afternoon, I was preparing to bathe… which in good circumstances is a difficult task. I had already bathed Alexander and he was drying in the front room.

.

When I had drained the tub, after Alex’s bath, I began to run it for myself, and left the bathroom with Alex in tow. For whatever reason… I get distracted… I was involved in getting Alex dried… For whatever reason, I took way too long. Suddenly I think the water is running in the bathroom!

.

Bye the time I get into the bathroom… it is flooded… as is the adjoining kitchen. I rush to the tub and turn off the water and pull the plug. How I am left alone in the house, with about an inch to two inches of standing water all over the bathroom and kitchen. Get everything off the floor… take off your slippers and socks… too late they are all ready ruined… still getting e3verything off the floor and into the front room… front room carpet is now getting wet… grab towels and begin this process – soak up water into large bath towel… lift bath towel from floor… rest half under my left arm at the shoulder… grip towel between upper left arm and shoulder and right hand… twist… repeat… about… ten THOUSAND times… Bye the time Allen got home, at 2PM, there was still about an inch of water all over the floors.

.

Now, did my best to clean up the mess I made. It left me in terrible pain for the past three days. It is Sunday morning, and I am still so very very sore. This, My Dear Readers, is why I have not published in several days. I hope that everyone understands, and returns to the blog… now that I am writing. It has been a very difficult and painful several days. Now, if I could actually afford a caregiver… anyway. Now, on with ‘A Week in Review’!

.

I must admit, and am very happy to announce, I managed to publish seven articles this week. Still keeping up this pace, for now the fourth month in a row!! I had a doctor’s appointment, this week, in L.A. and still managed to write and publish a full week’s work of seven articles. Yeah, I am pretty darn proud of that fact. Now, without further adieu I give you ‘A Week in Review’:

.

  • Sunday Funnies – May 4th, 2014 : “Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. If it is Sunday, then it is time for ‘Sunday Funnies’! This week has been a difficult week for me, My Dear Readers. My neck is swollen… actually the lymph nodes in my neck are swollen. All day Thursday thru Saturday I was running fevers of between 101 – 102 degrees. I have a horrible raspy cough, that crackles in my lungs like gravel, and I ache all over.” No wonder it’s been a rough week, all around. This is how it started out… with fevers, chills, and being sick! I had totally forgot that I was sick, just one week ago. Now, it is Sunday again, and I am just so very sore all over. I can hardly lift my hands to type, and my back is in terrible pain from my neck to my butt. Once I am finished with this article… and then ‘Sunday Funnies’ I am taking the rest of the day off!
  • The Mars Report – May 5th, 2014 : “Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. A big welcome back to ‘The Mars Report’ for May 5th, 2014. Tomorrow I must make a journey, by mass transit, from here in Orange County all the way into Los Angeles County, Rolling Hills Estates. I leave at 8:30AM and return home at 8PM. Yes, a twelve hour journey to see one doctor. Anywho, I am mentioning this because I am pressed for time, today. Therefore, this will be a shortened version of this storied series. Not to diminish this edition, because in this edition you will get to witness… … … Martian Dunes MOVE!” Amazing that while this was published and most of you , My Dear Readers, were reading this on Monday I was preparing for my visit, the very next afternoon. It HAS been a terribly eventful and stressful week, for Danny. Yes… I AM resting for the rest of this Sunday!
  • Lost In Space – May 6th, 2014 : “Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. An amazing fact came to my attention, just today. You see… I have been In LOVE with; Space, Space Flight, Space Exploration, Space Images, Star Gazing, Star Maps… you get the idea, since I was like an aware human being. Like most star-nuts I have a favorite constellation. The amazing fact is that in all the editions of ‘Lost in Space’ I have not once featured my favorite constellation. Therefore, the image you see above addresses this shortcoming!” Truly AMAZING was while you all were reading THIS article I was in transit to and back from Los Angeles! It was a very good visit, and we are working to get to the bottom of my frequent fevers and illness. This edition of ‘Lost in Space’ ended up being a very good edition, in deed. In spite of the terrible frantic pace of the week, I was still managing to mange my workload and some private time… some. In this edition, there are some incredible images from millions to billions of light years away. I hope that everyone takes the time and gives this edition a good look-see. ENJOY!
  • Notes from Behind the Keyboard – May 7th, 2014 : “Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. Now, before I get started on today’s edition of ‘Notes from Behind the Keyboard’ I wanted to take a moment to express my ‘Thanks!’ to people, without whom, my journey yesterday would not have been possible. I would like to say “Thank you!” to: All the drivers and support people at Orange County Para-Transit Access, Los Angeles County Para-Transit Access, the good people at OCTA and MTA, all of the nurses and support people at Palos Verdes Medical Group, my Primary Physician Dr. L. Gorlick, the phlebotomist and technicians from Memorial Medical Services at PVMD, and my caregiver and significant other of 27 years Glen Allen. Yesterday was my quarterly follow-up visit to my primary care giver, and good friend Dr. Laurence Gorlick.” Always wanting, and working, to keep you, My Dear Readers, in the loop… here are some photos taken while I was on my journey, and a flayer from the mall where my doctor’s office… is. It was quite a difficult journey, but time well spent. Take a moment and read about my journey, and see the photos and the flyer.
  • REVIEW – ‘The Horror in Smithville’ First Seven Parts! : “Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. I am sitting here, in an apartment way too hot to work… or even live, trying to get cool enough to start writing Part Eight of ‘The Horror in Smithville’ when I had a great idea. Prior to returning to writing the next chapter… maybe I should present a review of the first Seven parts! This will give me a chance for the room to cool…. Hopefully… and a chance to review everything that has happened to Timmy and Archer in the first sixty-five pages.” Here are LINKS to ALL of the FIRST seven episodes of ‘The Horror in Smithville’. I, originally, published this article to fill in time, and to encourage people to check out this on-going series. Much to my surprise, a Facebook friend (and someone from my childhood and hometown, Pearland,) asked me, on Friday, is there was a single place where she could get caught up with the story. Where are the first seven episodes? She asked. I would it terrible coincidental that just days before, I had published an article with just such a list, and links to all seven previous episode. Now, here is your chance to get caught up in, and caught up on ‘The Horror in Smithville’… This story really is gaining traction! YEAH!
  • The Horror in Smithville – Part EIGHT : “Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. Just as promised, I have worked through the night, and most of this morning, to make sure I was able to publish the much anticipated (and slightly tardy) Part EIGHT – ‘The Horror in Smithville’! You know, My Dear Readers, I am really glad that I didn’t promise any particular; plot twists, character changes, plot lines or story lines prior to writing.” Here it IS!! After many readers having waited another week, just to read this episode, here is the much anticipated PART EIGHT of The Horror in Smithville’!!! I am not sharing any spoilers, here today… so if you want to know “what happens”? You will just have to take a few moments and read this great episode, yourself! ENJOY!
  • The Deep Web – Review of First Three Issues : “Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. Today, Friday, I have decided to take the time to review the first three issues of ‘The Deep Web’ prior to continuing with this series. From what I am seeing in my traffic reports, a good many of my current readers are ‘new’ readers. New to The Other Shoe. Having said, I think it prudent that I review the very first three issues so that these ‘new’ readers can catch-up on this series.” After careful consideration, and much hand wringing, I decide to return to this series. Therefore, in order to get everyone up to speed, I have published this review of the first three articles. Be sure to check back, right here, nest Friday for Part Four, of this very controversial and informative series.

.

Well, My Dear Readers, that brings us to the very end of this week’s review. I hope everyone had enjoyed this romp through the collective works of the past seven days. I am simply amazed, looking back on the events of the week, that I managed to write and publish all this work. It just goes to show you, I really do want to share and inform.

.

Now, I a simply must rush. For I have, still, to publish this then write ‘Sunday Funnies’ and publish… before I can rest… again. Thank you for all your kindness and until we meet, again,…

.

Adieu!

.

Thank YOU!

Danny Hanning of The Other Shoe – May 6th, 2014

A Week in Review – April 19th, 2014

Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. If it’s the weekend, then it is time for ‘A Week in Review’! The place to go to catch-up on everything published during your busy workweek. This week saw several ‘firsts’, and also it saw Daniel reach his limit, finally. For the past three months I have kept up an insane pace, for a single person doing everything for a very busy and productive blog.

.

This week I tried my best to keep ahead of the curve, in spite of a very important doctor’s visit and several lab visits. I must apologize, because I was unable to keep up the pace of the past three months, and meet my medical obligations. Unfortunately, the blog suffered and I apologize. This week I only managed to publish six articles in the given seven days.

.

However, to my credit I managed to publish the single longest episode of ‘The Horror in Smithville’ ever! Weighing in at 14 pages, in Word, this ‘Part Six’ knocked my socks off. For the past six weeks I have searched for pivotal points in; plot, character development, interweaving characters, and crossover characters in this horror story. This week I DID IT!

.

Within the fourteen pages of this week’s episode I interwove Timmy and Archer’s plot lines, developed both of these main characters AND I established my writing style further by crossing over characters from ‘The Adventures of Princess Nadia’ with Timmy and Archer! If you haven’t read this week’s episode, then you have yet to experience one of the greatest examples of my writing style ever!

.

Now, without further adieu I bring you ‘A Week in Review’!

.

  • Coming This Week – April 13th 2014 : “Now, for the upcoming week. I can promise that there will be another edition of; ‘The Mars Report’, ‘Lost in Space’, ‘The Horror in Smithville’, ‘Coming this Week’ and ‘A Week in Review’. Beyond that I am not really sure, My Dear Readers. As you all know, by now, I will do my very best to make sure I write all the regular articles. As well, when I have the time and my body is not preventing me, I will do my best to bring even more articles. I have been toying with several ‘New Series’ and bringing back so older article series.” I am happy to announce that I did manage to publish everything that I promised, in this preview of the week to come. Again, I apologize for not having the strength to publish more and bring you any more ‘New Series’ this week. I will do my best to bring… everything I can in the coming week. My health is really failing… and my doctor’s office is refusing to release the results of my blood tests! I am outraged and tomorrow I plan on calling and asking for legal assistance with this doctor’s office.
  • The Mars Report – April 14th 2014 : “Anyone with experience with photography will understand; if it is does not appear in both camera images… at the same time. Then it is likely not a ‘Martian trying to signal our rover’. More likely that not, what we have here is a very shiny natural source somewhere in the foothills of Mount Sharp. A rock surface with a very shiny surface which, when viewed at this spot from a very particular angle reflects in a camera lens. It is quite likely that, if there were humans there, they might very well not see this reflection.” And, with that, I did my best to debunk the ridiculous rumors (on the internet) regarding the reflection Curiosity took an image. I know that some will never be satisfied, and continue with their claims of “Alien Encounters” and will never be swayed by reason and/or science. Therefore, I only devoted a portion of this edition, and will not revisit this subject in future editions of ‘The Mars Report’. Coming this week will be a review of a decade with ‘Spirit’ and ‘Opportunity’ rovers on Mars. I have already put together over a dozen images, from both rovers, to review. It is going to be a great edition of this storied series.
  • Lost in Space – April 16th 2014 : “Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe, and welcome to this week’s edition of ‘Lost in Space’. As with every week, I have already picked out the images for your viewing pleasure. Boy, do I have a great batch of stellar eye-candy for you to view. Just like every other week, I have also done a bit of research for each image I present. Having said, I simply must tell you, My Dear Readers, that the universe around us is a wondrous place filled with amazing sights and incredible science.” I am really happy with the comments and feedback coming for this series. On Facebook, on Tumblr and even via email I am getting ‘Kudos!” and congrats from many of the regular readers, and even from new visitors. ‘Lost in Space’ has already established itself as a cornerstone of The Other Shoe, and my work. If I am able to keep up this pace, you can look forward to week after week, after week of this series, yet to come. Thank you for all you support and “Kudos”!
  • Daniel’s Personal & Medical Update – April 16th, 2014 : “As I have mentioned, I have a lump on the right side of my face at the jaw line. It has been evaluated by an Otolaryngologist, just two weeks ago. It was his opinion that it was an “enlarged lymph node” and gave me a order to have a C.T. (computed tomography) scan of my jaw and neck. I had procrastinated setting up this imaging, due to scheduling conflicts with my caregiver. Now, back to yesterday.” A week has passed and I still do not know the results of the blood tests. As well, I have yet to schedule the C.T. scan… or have the much needed surgery scheduled! Tomorrow I am planning on calling the doctor’s office and demanding that I be given the blood test results and move forward with the scan and surgery. THIS is the reason why I do not want to change doctors. I was, initially, impressed with this doctor’s office. However, the initial shine was worn off and I realize I am best served (and my health is best served) by staying with my doctor of the past eight years!
  • The Horror in Smithville – Part SIX : “Not only was this a rat riding a ferret… this was a smart (and fully clothed) rat riding a ferret. Archer was still taking this all in, but did not want to appear rude, so he answered Alexander.” And that is all you are going to get, from this fantastic episode, without going and reading the entire story! My Dear Readers, I am very proud of this episode and the inroads I made in just one chapter. I have gone far in defining my writing style, and created trademark literary devices. Already I have next week’s episode forming in my mind. Now, for the down side… I poured so much of myself into this one article… Part Six of ‘The Horror in Smithville’ that I failed in writing several other articles. I apologize and will do my best to better balance my workload. However, I am extremely happy with this week’s episode… If you haven’t… READ THIS EPISODE! Thanks… J

.

Well, My Dear Readers, that brings us to the end of this article and to the end of this week. Thank you for all your support and understanding. Again, I apologize for failing to publish all seven to nine articles I usually manage. To my credit?

.

I did keep up that insane pace for over six weeks… all by myself… with no help from the outside… at all! At this point I do not have any doctor’s appointments scheduled. However, I simply must get these tests results, get the C.T. scan scheduled and the surgery scheduled. If I end up in the doctor’s office several times, next week, it will reduce the amount of content… number of articles, I will be able to publish.

.

I hope that everyone understands and keep coming back for more and more of ‘The Other Shoe’!

.

Adieu!

.

Thank YOU!

The Mars Report – April 14th 2014

Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. Well, since I last published about Mars, April 7th, there has been some hubbub about… well, a light… on… Mars! Yes, as on can well imagine, this had the blogo’sphere burning daylight. ‘An independent light source seen on Mars!’ Had very nutcase and shut-in burning up their ISPs with radical ideas about its source, and reason. My Dear Readers, if that is the ‘kind of’ blogging you are looking for… then this is not the place for you. Please exit stage left…

.

However, if you want the scientific explanation, then you have arrived at the correct blog. First, let’s get all the anticipation out of the way. Below is one of the images that has raised all the fuss.

.

First Martian Image with Light source

(First Martian Image with Light source)

.

Now, from the left eye camera, within seconds of the image above, there is no light source.

.

SAME Spot Left EYE within one second

(SAME Spot Left EYE within one second)

.

Anyone with experience with photography will understand; if it is does not appear in both camera images… at the same time. Then it is likely not a ‘Martian trying to signal our rover’. More likely thatn not, what we have here is a very shiny natural source somewhere in the foothills of Mount Sharp. A rock surface with a very shiny surface which, when viewed at this spot from a very particular angle reflects in a camera lens. It is quite likely that, if there were humans there, they might very well not see this reflection.

.

Further proof of what (and NASA) have proffered as an answer, is the image below?

.

A pair of Navcam images in the same direction from the previous afternoon has a bright spot similarly located in the right-eye image.”[1]

.

Same camera previous afternoon

Same camera previous afternoon

(Same camera previous afternoon)

.

At least for me, this is more proof that what we are witness, is nothing more than a lens flare. If you have ever had photography as a hobby, and made either rock concerts or landscapes your forte then you will have been exposed to (even lost great images, too) lens flares. Below is our final image in this conversation. I have taken the liberty to copy and paste the text from NASA.

.

“This image from the Navigation Camera (Navcam) on NASA’s Curiosity Mars rover includes a bright spot near the upper left corner. The sun is in the same direction, west-northwest, above the frame. Bright spots appear in images from the rover nearly every week. Typical explanations for them are cosmic rays hitting the light detector or sunlight glinting from rocks.”[2]

.

Bright Spot Toward Sun in Image from NASA's Curiosity Mars Rover

(Bright Spot Toward Sun in Image from NASA’s Curiosity Mars Rover)

.

So, for me at least, this puts this whole matter to bed. However, If sometime in the future… by some galactic fluke, these images crop up in the news again. I will take the time to address them… again. Honestly, there is so much ‘good science’ happening with the “Mars Science Laboratory – Rover Curiosity’ that all this is a merely a distraction. ‘Good Thing’? These images brought Curiosity, and the science NASA is involved, on the Martian surfaceinto the view of the public. Like the old saw ‘Any exposure is good exposure’.

.

Sitting here, and putting this article together, I thought to myself… ‘I would certainly be remiss to just publish about this lark…’ Looking at the published images (refined, categorized and ready for press release) there really isn’t anything new since my last edition of ‘The Mars Report’. Honest, I looked at several of the sites.

.

Now, I do not wish to be remembered as ‘that guy who never went the extra mile…’ So, I have managed to put together some images I had taken a pass on, before, that have real scientific merit. For all of My Dear Readers? Those wonderful regulars that come often and stay long? I am writing this Sunday afternoon at 6PM, long after the publication of ‘A Week in Review’. This week promises to be very busy and I am working to get ahead of the curve.

.

Our next image is the strongest evidence, so far, NASA/JPL has found of flowing liquid water on Mars. Now, for science junkies and the like, this a majorly important image. Rather than work to paraphrase what NASA/JPL has released with this image. Let me present to you their words, exactly as presented with this image.

.

“The outcrop characteristics are consistent with a sedimentary conglomerate, or a rock that was formed by the deposition of water and is composed of many smaller rounded rocks cemented together. Water transport is the only process capable of producing the rounded shape of clasts of this size.”[3]

.

Sounds reasonable to me, how about you? Now, let me share the image they wrote about.

.

.

Since we are on the topic of fluid water on the Martian surface, let me bring you another image as evidence. In an outcrop called Shaler’. In the Yellowknife Bay of area of Mars’ Gale Crater this outcrop was found. In this image we see inclined layering called ‘cross-bedding’. This only occurs as the result of passing fluid water and is indicative of sediment-transport in stream flows. Thus adding to the growing scientific evidence that fluid water once flowed on the Martian surface. Me thinks that it is surprising (and also rather revealing) that science like this does not make the news… yet lens flares, somehow, do. What curious creatures we American humans, are. Yes?

.

'Shaler' Unit's Evidence of Stream Flow

‘Shaler’ Unit’s Evidence of Stream Flow

(‘Shaler’ Unit’s Evidence of Stream Flow )

.

Week, before last, I ended this series with an image of the Earth from Mars. I am always working to keep things in perspective. How small our planet is, when view from the Martian surface. It gives me pause, and should serve as food for thought. Tonight, I bring you yet another image of perspective. In this image, if enlarged enough, one can see our Earth and the moon from the Martian surface.[4]

.

.

With that, we come to this week’s edition of ‘The Mars Report’. I really do enjoy bringing this series, and these images, to you My Dear Readers. I can only hope that they, and I, have brought some wonder and even joy… to you.

.

Adieu!

.

Thank YOU!

.

P.S. Just a little FYI for all of you, My Dear Readers. ‘The Mars Report’ has become the #1-article aeries here at The Other Shoe. Last week’s edition gathered 31 ‘Likes’ in less than one week! Be a part of the phenomenon and be sure to ‘Like’ this edition, too. I must admit… when I started this blog… I never imagined I would be publishing two weekly series looking to the stars. Thank you!

Coming This Week, to The Other Shoe – April 6th, 2014

Daneil Hanning of The Other Shoe 2001

.

Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. As well, welcome to this the third edition of what is now a regular here, ‘Coming This Week’. It is in this series I preview the articles to come in the following week. Now, My Dear Readers, I am just coming off one of the single most prolific week’s in recent memory, here at The Other Shoe. With the publication of nine articles, in just seven days, last week. I have my sincere doubts of my ability to produce nine articles this week, too.

.

How does that old saying go; ‘The mind is willing, the flesh is weak’. That is very much the case for me, and this coming week. Just reviewing my sourcesfor material. I can quickly see that I will have sufficient materials for; ‘The Mars Report’ and ‘Lost in Space’. A quick visit to NASA and JPL shows that Curiosity has delivered so fresh images for your review. Already late, here today… Sunday, I am tempted to engage in beginning day after tomorrow (Monday’s) edition of ‘The Mars Report’.

.

Curiosity has reached the approach to its next way point; ‘The Kimberly. As well, I am not sure if you saw this in the news. Mars is the closest, to the Earth, that it has been in over two years. For the next several days, even with your bare eyes, we will be treated to some of the best views of Mars in years .

.

The distance between our Earth and our sister planet, Mars, can be as much as 250 million miles. However, starting on the 8thof this April Mars will approach Earth and only be 56 million miles away. That is, roughly, 1/5th the distance for the next few days. For all of us in the Northern hemisphere you can find Mars, just after dusk, hanging close to the Moon. For more on this event, and how and when it is best to view, be sure to check out ‘The Mars Report’ on Monday.

.

You can look forward to an all new edition of ‘Lost in Space’ for your reading pleasure. Form just a cursory search of potential images, I have found several that are just as spectacular, and maybe even more. As always, I will include background information, some of the science involved, and links to all the sources and more. I really have fallen in love, with this series of articles, and writing and publishing brings me great joy.

.

This coming week will bring us yet another edition of ‘The Deep Web’ for your edification and review. I am hoping to have made the time, and effort, to nail down everything you need to know to create a ‘Virtual Machine’ on your Windows computer. By creating a virtual machine you create a whole new shell between your computer and the ‘Black Hats’ that there dewll.

.

Coming to the end of next week, already, you can look forward to more thrills and chills with the publication of the Second Half of Part Four. Part Four of ‘The Horror in Smithville’, which I hope to conclude, will take up just where we left off with the boys; Timmy and Archer. After falling asleep way too early, the found themselves sharing a dream. A dream that brought them terror, and fears they did not know. Unsuspecting, they will climb back in bed. Shut their eyes and retire, with visions of Blueberry cobbler in their heads. It will not be sweets, that they encounter once asleep. I will not share spoilers, I will just say. Their night of terror, and horror, has only just begun!

.

Well, My Dear Readers, that brings us fully round. Another week of fine reading, only here at The Other Shoe, is to be found. Now, all I ask, in return for these fine works, is that you PLEASE SHARE what you have found. Share with family, share with friends. Share with co-workers and In-Laws, both favored and not. Share with church goers, and neighbors… and even strangers around. For all that I do, all that I research, all that I download and upload. For all that I write and edit and, finally, publish for you.

.

I only ask that you make it well known, that my work… you do enjoy. I am trying, so very hard indeed, to grow my readership from just me and just you. This past week, for the very first time ever. I saw my visitor counter go up to 59! That is the highest I have ever seen, this counter to show. Now, I am afraid, I am possessed to see if we can do better in the weeks to come. I would give just anything, for this counter to show, One HUNDERED visitors to The Other Shoe they did come. This goal, I am afraid, cannot be met by just me… and you.

.

I will tell you quite honestly, that the world it would mean to me, for this counter to venture closer to triple digits. With my health failing, my pain increasing great happiness it would bring. To think that 100 readers, I did bring. So, I beseech of you, My Dear Readers, to assist if you will. In a tiny competition, this week, for most visitors I will.

.

And, with those words and that challenge, I leave you this day. This preview of coming entertainment and images, I hope you enjoyed. Thank you for your time, and you efforts. I hope to see you, again, soon.

.

As always I am deeply honored that you come here and read my work.

.

Thank YOU!

Coming This Week – March 30/31st, 2014

The Other Shoe's Daniel Hanning

The Other Shoe’s Daniel Hanning 2/2014

Welcome back My Dear Reader to The Other Shoe. Well now, I would usually write and publish this article on Monday. Yet, something just caught my eye, and I just had to share it with you, My Dear Readers. If you are reading this article on Sunday March 30th, 2014 (or have visited and read articles between Friday March 28th and Sunday March 30th), you are taking part in the single largest influx of visitors my blogs have ever seen. Yes, I have two locations for The Other Shoe. The primary blog located at blog.com and secondary located at wordpress.com. I saw secondary only because it was the second location of my blog launched. Remember, I do everything at both blog locations. Writing, editing, publishing, promotions… everything.

.

On Friday March 28th, the secondary location (at wordpress.com) reached an all time high at eighteen visitors in one day. The following day, March the 29th, my primary blog location (blog.com) had an all time high of twenty-two visitors in one day. Yes, I know… in the grand scheme of things… that is not a lot of visitors. Although, for a my blog… Well, I am proud to announce this news. See, I have Google Analytics monitoring my blog.com location and the sister location at WordPress provides their own analytics, that I check regularly. For those of you, My Dear Readers, that have been with me for awhile, two or more years out of the past four.

.

You will know that I used to publish a series of articles where I shared the results of the analytics. I did this for three years, then I just stopped. I am not too sure as to why. Honestly, it always felt a bit too much like… bragging. Showing off and… well, that is just not me. I am proud when my efforts merit. However, and you can ask anyone that I went to Middle, High School or college with… I do not like to brag, about myself.

.

I am very proud of the traffic I experienced this week, at both blogs. Now, I have worked extremely hard these past three weeks at writing and publishing quality content on a regular basis. Just over the past three weeks I have introduced FOUR new article series. I hope that it is these new articles series that are driving this increase in traffic, and not some factor that I cannot replicate.

.

Now, I would like to share with you, My Dear Readers, what I have planned for the coming week, here at The Other Shoe. Monday, would have… should have seen the publication of this article. However, since I wanted everyone to know (they are part of a historic weekend of traffic), I am not really sure exactly what I will write… tomorrow. I would not be surprised if you saw a new edition of ‘The Mars Report’ or ‘Lost in Space’. Let me tell you all that those two series are the most difficult for me to publish. Writing them is not very difficult. In fact, I greatly enjoy creating the narrative for the images I choose. It is the; downloading of, uploading of, embedding of, and choosing of these images that is quite difficult. I am not complaining, just explaining.

.

This week you, My Dear Readers, will be privy to; an all new episode of ‘The Horror in Smithville’. The boys have… fallen… yeah, right… ‘fallen’ to sleep… and we all know what happens when young boys fall asleepon a rainy night full of thunder and lightening. Next, you will be treated with a new edition of (both); ‘The Mars Report’ and ‘Lost in Space’. Well, that is what I have written right here in my day planner for writing. Yes, I have a writing schedule written out in my day planner.

.

Coming up next will be an all new issue of ‘The Deep Web’. This edition will get a bit more technical, and once done… you will be better prepared to venture into the dark and deep web than ever before. Finally, you will enjoy another episode of your regulars; ‘A Week in Review’ and ‘Sunday Funnies’. Now, I think that I have mentioned it before, I am looking for a political cartoonist. I simply cannot pay, but anyone that would like the practice and exposure for their work, I am looking for someone to add to my ‘Sunday Funnies’ with political cartoons.

.

That brings us to the end of the week of articles, and to the end of this preview of the coming week. FYI – Wednesday afternoon I do have a doctor’s appointment to look at a… ‘growth’ on my jawbone. If that goes poorly… it may negatively impact my writing schedule. However, if it goes well.. then I just might be of the temperament to write additional works not mentioned in this preview.

.

Well, My Dear Readers that brings us to the end of this week’s ‘Coming This Week’. I hope that you have all enjoyed the previews of what is to come… and I hope that you all enjoy the fact that (if you are here on Sunday) you, My Dear Readers, have been part of the single largest influx of visitor traffic in the history of my blogs.

.

As always I am deeply honored that you came here and read my work.

.

Thank YOU!
