“They go by monikers like BoomBoom, xshockwave27x and ClydeBot. They calculate click speeds and work to build up their APM, or actions per minute. They don jerseys emblazoned with sponsorship logos while sitting in $400 top-of-the-line gaming chairs.

In a custom-built, tricked out room on the third floor of a downtown Chicago building, we catch a glimpse of college students making history. They are part of Robert Morris University Illinois’ video game program — the nation’s first varsity eSports squad. For at least five hours a day, and in most cases plenty more, they are engrossed in League of Legends, their online game of choice.”

.

Welcome back My Dear Shoevians to The Other Shoe. While rummaging through the ‘news of the day’ I ran across this article at CNN. Seems gamers, just like myself, are now getting scholarships to college by just playing games… very well. This phenomenon is a boon to gamers of all walks of life, as the following story shows.

.

“When he graduated from high school in the small town of Ava, Missouri, Andrew Casey had no idea where his life was going. He wasn’t college bound like some people he knew and lived at home, finding work at a nearby Taco Bell.

He found meaning caring for his grandmother, who had moved in with his family as she was dying of cancer. He fed her, gave her medicines and lifted her up when she needed to move. It was the sort of compassion for others her son had always exhibited, says his mother, Kim Rolling. Just like the time he asked her to buy a special elementary school T-shirt for a classmate who couldn’t afford one himself.

After his grandmother passed away, Andrew, 22, had nothing but time.

Some friends suggested he check out League of Legends. He’d been drawn to computer games since he was about 3, when he first got his hands on an old-school Nintendo and played Mario Bros. with his grandparents. He went online to see what his friends were talking about and was immediately sold.

“All my stress disappeared,” he says.

His mother won’t lie when she thinks about how much time he spent in front of computer screens.

“It did drive me crazy,” Rolling says. “I was always telling him, ‘You’re never going to get anywhere playing video games.'”

Now, she’s eating her words. Gladly.

It’s this opportunity to play at RMU that got her son thinking about college and bigger possibilities. And now that he’s there, he’s thriving.

The same story gets told by other parents, including one who suspects her son flunked out of his first college because of video games. Now at RMU, where his playing is tied to a scholarship and students must maintain a benchmark GPA, she boasts that her son made the dean’s list.

Some students on the squad haven’t lasted. They weren’t able to strike the right balance between academics and gaming. Or maybe the school wasn’t the right fit. Or Chicago wasn’t for them.

But for Rolling and other parents, the program has been a blessing, even if it hasn’t been easy watching their kids leave the nest.

Her son went from a town with one traffic light to embracing big-city living. He’s majoring in graphic arts, has a girlfriend and a circle of good friends. He’s part of a team and, in that capacity, being true to himself.”

“My role is to help people out,” he says of his League of Legends position. “I’ll do anything so my friends on my team don’t die.”

.

Opportunity is where you look for it, or so it would seem for Andrew Casey. My Dear Shoevians I cannot express my delight that young men and women can now advance their education, and create an otherwise unavailable opportunity, by be the best they can at gaming. I have played, been a gamer, since Pong and PacMan games made their appearance. Now I overcome my feelings of physical inadequacy by riding horses, running and swimming in games like; World of Warcraft, Aion, Rift and Age of Conan. These games give me an outlet that would, otherwise, be unavailable to a person with my disabilities.

.

I can accomplish tasks (quests), ride a horse thorough lush and beautiful forest, and swim deep into a lake or ocean. In game my disabilities disappear and I am capable and able to do anything my heart desires. Gaming has tremendous possibilities for our current society, and for millions of people with disabilities. Now. they offer opportunity to those who thought they were without. Gaming is great… and it seems to just keep getting greater.

.

Adieu!

.

Thank you!

A Week in Review – August 23rd, 2014

Danny in Rolling Hills Estates August 12, 2014

Danny in Rolling Hills Estates August 12, 2014

.

Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. My Dear Readers this week has been a fabulously entertaining and busy week for The Other Shoe! With the publication of this weekly review I will have written and published TEN articles in one week! It is, currently, Saturday night at 8:20 PM PDT. Then articles and Ten dollar$ in donations at Danny’s Cancer Treatment Fund[1] @ Indiegogo equals = $1 for each article written and published. Just a bit of very depressing Danny-trivia.

.

Although I feel deep-seated depression over; my cancer, my increased pain, my lack of sleep, my lack of appetite, and how my limited financial resources condemn me to a short(end) lifespan. I would be a fool to not be proud at my; publication of ten articles in one week, the creation/design of an all new newsletter (for The Other Shoe), the design/creation of a business card for same, and the launch of Danny’s Cancer Treatment Fund[2] all in seven days. I would be hard pressed to think of another person I know that could accomplish all those tasks, in the same period of time, and make them all so unique and beautiful. I was looking over Part 14-A of ‘The Horror in Smithville’ and I was struck my the depth of the character I created, and just how he is to fit in with the story and characters. You will just have to wait, but trust me… Principal Marsch’s quirks are going to… play wonderfully… soon.

.

I am ever so tired. I have not allowed myself much sleep, this week. Even if I had allowed it, I doubt that I could have slept. I am beside myself with financial worries. Allen and I have just barely able to make ends meet… so far. However, with the addition of thirty dollars, or more, a week in transportation costs, more medications, and the loss of income by Allen having to take time off to get me to; PET scan, appointments, chemotherapy/radiation therapy. I just do not see how we will be able to continue to make ends meet.

.

I am doing my best, honestly, to keep the faith. Trust that the people who care about me, that value me… my friendship… my works… my contributions… will come to my aid. I have to… or I will loose the will to… live.

.

‘A Week in Review’ is a wonderful way for you, My Dear Readers, to catch up on all the wonderful stories and articles I have written and published over the week. Here, on the weekend, when you have some free time. Now, you can come here, to this article, and read, view and link to all the wonderful work I have provided. A very busy person, can, in a matter of hours read all the great works I have published. Therefore, now that I have set the mood and prepared you for the review. It is, without further adieu, I give you

‘A Week in Review’ for August 23rd, 2014.

.

  • IT’S ALIVE!!!! – “IT’S ALIVE!!! Rather…. It IS LIVE! Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe and a very special article! This article is to announce that my @Indiegogo campaign Danny’s Cancer Treatment Fund[1] IS NOW LIVE! With the (soon) addition of my most recently shot ‘Pitch Video’ (and this one is GREAT! I am very funny… and quite entertaining… if I say so myself…) this puppy is up and ready for your contributions!” What a wonderful way to start the week! As well, by starting the campaign on THIS DAY it ends on October 1st, 2014! Talk about impeccable timing! I had no idea, when I pressed publish on this article, that this act was to catapult me into the single most prolific week in more than a year! Little did I know that this article would be #1 of TEN! With the publication of this article I set in motion the effort to garner the support I NEED to FIGHT MY CANCER!
  • The Mars Report – August 18th 2014 – “Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. Today is Monday August 18th, 2014. It has been just eleven days since my world was turned upside down and I was told that I have Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma cancer. I am still working my way through, like, the stages of ‘grief’ (?). I think that I am to the anger part. Anyway, regardless of my personal/health situation I am going to… “Keep Moving Forward” by writing and publishing as many of my regular articles as I can manage. That being the case, today is Monday and that means a trip to Mars!” I had really began to miss the publication of this article series. ‘The Mars Report’ IS one of my most favorite article series in all of The Other Shoe. Mars is mankind’s next target for manned exploration, and as such, we are destined to spend a lot of time exploring. Exploring, mapping and gaining a familiarity necessary for a safe and productive manned mission. Each and every week I get to share with you, and you get to enjoy, all the new; discoveries, images, and scientific experiments Curiosity and Opportunity have managed. I just love this article aeries, and I hope that you do to!
  • My Two Cents – “Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. Today I start on another new journey. As always, this will be a journey of adventure. An shared adventure between you, My Dear Readers, and me. ‘My Two Cents’ is an all new article series, that starts today with the publication of this article. Each week, that my health allows, I will come to you, My Dear Readers, and share ‘My Two Cents’ on; issues of the day, personal observations, current trends, foreign affairs, world news, and even (sometimes) political and geo-political issues.” This is the premier edition of an ‘all new’ article series. I have been searching for a way to publish an editorial article series without it being… too opinionated. The name ‘My Two Cents’ has helped me to establish an article series that does share my opinions without appearing as I am talking down to anyone. That was my primary goal, and I feel very confident I have met said goal. I look forward to many more weeks, to come, of this wonderfully entertaining article series. I hope that I write it so that you, My Dear Readers, do too!
  • BREAKING NEWS – Gov. Perry BOOKED in Travis County – “JUST IN – Austin, Texas: Republican Governor Rick Perry has just surrendered to authorities at the Travis County criminal justice center. Indicted for ‘Abuse of Power’ as Governor of the State of Texas, (R) Rick Perry was lead away, just moments ago, to booking at the criminal justice center in Austin, Texas. While dividing, along party lines, many in the Great State of Texas the reality of this situation is far fro ‘politically motivated’.” I published this article for one reason and one reason only! I saw that I could BEAT the major networks and media outlets, getting this news out, and I DID! I was not exervcising any political design or desire. I just wanted to be first in publishing ‘Breaking News’ for once!
  • Lost in Space – Solar System Tour – NEPTUNE – “However, I have to be honest about my limitations with my current diagnosis. As well, with the launch of Danny’s Cancer Treatment Fund at Indiegogo there have not been enough days in the week. Further, right now I am suffering with crushing depression because of the failure of my attempt to raise the money I need for (successfully) fight my cancer. With nearly 100 people ‘Sharing’ my campaign and only $10 raised I am beside myself with feelings of failure. I can only hope that this trend changes and… somehow… people understand that without their help I simply cannot fight this cancer within me.” This was the first time in several weeks, more like a month or more, that I was able to write and publish both ‘The Mars Report’ and ‘Lost in Space’ BOTH in the same week! Finally, there were enough new images from Mars and I had the will and good health to put together the next location in my ‘Toru of the Solar System’. I am not sure if I will be able to replicate this, next week, but I will try. I am quite proud of this edition and all the information and images of Neptune! This was an edition of ‘Lost in Space’ that brings me great pride.
  • The Other Shoe – NEWSLETTER! – “Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. I am working doubly hard for your attention and support! I have, just now, finished the Very First EDITION of ‘The Other Shoe – NEWSLETTER!’ That’s right, I have just spent the past two days working to take last week’s work and put it into a newsletter for The Other Shoe. I am going to use this newsletter to; put in mailings, hand out in local malls and shopping centers, hand out to residents and any other place I might find to spread the word of my work. Allen has even offered to put some in bags, as he is working as a cashier, at a local department store. I just told him “BE CAREFUL!” I would hate for him to get into trouble at his job.” Right now Allen is at his job with this newsletter! I really hope he does not get in trouble handing it out. I have really wanted to put together this newsletter for the past… two years. It was just luck, and well placed stars that allowed me to finally put this together and get it published. I just LOVE designing and writing newsletters! I started back in middle school, in Pearland, and honed my skill in the mid to late 90’s at a complex I managed. Plazawoods apartments needed a weekly newsletter and the owner was willing to promise to pay me for my efforts. Even though he failed to ever PAY me for my efforts? For TWO YEARS I took great pride and had a LOT of FUN brining a weekly newsletter to my residents. Now, I can design, write and publish one for my blog! JOY!
  • The Horror in Smithville – Part 14-A – “Now, My Dear Readers, we are about to start with Part (Chapter or Episode) Fourteen! However, there is a trick with this chapter. A trick that has caused the delay in the publication of the next twenty to thirty pages of ‘The Horror in Smithville’. Part (or Chapter or Episode) Fourteen comes in FIVE PARTS! That’s right, one chapter in five parts. They will be designated 14; A, B, C, D, and E. Today we will start with Part 14A. Now, My Dear Readers, all of the five… sections of Part 14 ALL happen at the same time! That is correct! The next five weekly episodes of ‘The Horror in Smithville’ happen (in the story world) SIMULTANEOUSLY!” This was/is the MUCH anticipated return to the Main story line of this wonderful horror story. As well, this particular chapter/episode has been a particular challenge to me, as a writer and as a publisher. If you read the excerpt above then you understand that I am (with the publication of this chapter) launching FIVE different timelines all at once! In time all FIVE will collide with each other… and what a wonderful episode that will be. ‘Oh, what tangled webs we weave!”
  • The Other Shoe – BOTH Blogs – Traffic 2014 – “Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. Today is Friday so a big ‘TGiF’ to everyone out there reading this blog! Just yesterday I was rummaging around my blog, looking at this and that, trying to glean some information about What you, My Dear Readers, are reading and what I can add or replicate to improve my traffic. Well, the best place to start for that kind of information is… Traffic Reports!” I have not published one of these ‘Traffic Report’ articles in many many months. However, I was just looking over the traffic reports for the Word Press location and I was struck by my international penetration! My Dear Readers, I had not realized just how many of you were from nations all over this globe! That you ARE; French, English, German, Indian, and Australian, just to name a few! I was so surprised and PROUD that my work is read around the world, I just HAD to share it with all my readers here in America… and Texas! I NEVER thought that my WORDS would reach round the world. Now I KNOW that they HAVE!
  • Notes From Behind the Keyboard – August 23rd, 2014 – “Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. With the publication of this article I exceed my greatest expectations for; writing, editing, and publication for a single week. In this week I have; written/edited/published eight articles for The Other Shoe, designed and published an ‘All NEW’ Newsletter for The Other Shoe, and designed and published All NEW business cards for The Other Shoe & Danny’s Cancer Treatment Find @ Indiegogo[1], Launched a funding campaign to raise the monies I need to battle my Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma Cancer and spent 10-14 hours everyday online promoting the campaign and The Other Shoe. Right now, Allen is at work (at Kohl’s in Huntington Beach) as a cashier and he is handing out copies of the ‘ALL NEW’ newsletter & Business Card to any/all concerned customers.” What good is a newsletter handout without a business card attached? Not Very Good, that is what! That is why I spent most of last night and all of this morning designing and printing brand NEW business cards for The Other Shoe! They have information on; The Other Shoe, Danny’s Cancer Treatment Fund[3] at Indiegogo and ME! I really had a blast designing the business cards. Then when I put them together with the all-new newsletter? THEY MATCHED! I have no idea just how I managed to do it, but once I had the business cards stapled to the newsletter it was obvious to myself and Allen that the colors MATCHED! I was so very PROUD to send them out, today. That was what I wanted, too. I wanted to distribute a package of information on my funding campaign for treatment of my cancer. As well, I wanted to put something out into the community I currently reside about my blog and my work. Mission ACCOMPLISHED!

.

That concludes my review of the ten articles that I have written and published this week. With this article included, I have written and published ELEVEN articles! That is something to me proud of, if I say so myself! My Dear Readers, that is just my work on this blog!

.

Along with the ELEVEN articles? O have; designed, written mission statement, shoot/edited/improved THREE videos for the campaign, designed and wrote an all new newsletter, and designed and printed business cards! I have not been this busy since my Power Chair Campaign! I am proud… although… My Dear Readers?

.

It does make me extremely depressed to think of all the work I have accomplished… just for ten dollars. L I will keep writing, and publishing and begging for YOUR help! I simply cannot stop! To stop fighting? Would to be signal that I am ready to die, without a fight. I do not want this canacer to beat me so early in this battle. However, without money I am fighting a tank with fingernail clippers.

.

My Dear Readers, this brings us to the end of this Week in Review! I hope that you have enjoyed this review, and I also hope that you have enjoyed this weeks’ work. I look forward to the coming week, and the coming articles and stories. Finally…

A Week in Review – 500th Articles A Week’s Celebration!

Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. For the past two days I have been completely waylaid by pain and fevers. All day Saturday and Sunday I was completely unable to; get out of bed, raise my hands or arms, eat or pretty much anything. Today, I am feeling less pain, but I am still without the strength to do anything. However, I see that my blog traffic is down to TEN PEOPLE! My heart weeps, seriously. I am fairly upset that my pride and joy has fallen this far… and there is little I can actually do to change this.

.

So I decided to write an edition of ‘A Week in Review’ to cover the week of celebratory articles for the publication of my FIVE HUNDREDTH ARTICLE! Yeah, I am very proud to have reached this milestone in publication. I do not know of many other people that have written and published over five hundred articles… much les in just four short years. IT was my pride that pushed me to write so very much last week. I am pretty certain that the push to publish is the reason for my woes.

.

Honestly? IF I thought I could take a week… rest? I would! I really need some time off. However, each and every time I take even two days off… my blog’s traffic tumbles and suffers. My little personal hell. Anyways, here is a review of the week of review articles!

.

  • FIVE HUNDRED ARTICLES a Review & Celebration! #1 Redux : “Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. It is my sincere hope that everyone had a very safe and fun July 4th weekend! This is the very heart of our ‘American Summer’ season, and one of the favorites for American children all over our great nation. I remember sitting atop the Herman Professional Building, right across the street from the Herman Zoo and Herman Park watching the 4th fireworks while sitting in an air-conditioned office. Sitting and eating orange slices with my face (nearly) plastered to the doctor’s office window. What a great way to start a summer vacation!” This was the second time I published this article. NEITHER time did I realize that I misspelled the word ‘Review’ in both! One would think that somebody that reads my blog… and cares would have told me I made this mistake. Yeah… I am REALLY depressed… and it is only getting worse. Here is the first of the five articles I wrote to (try to) celebrate the publication of my 500th article here at The Other Shoe. This review is of the wondrous article series ‘Lost In Space’! For the past year this article series has shared incredible images from the Hubble Space Telescope (and other sources) that have literally taken the breath away form hundreds of readers. Quickly ‘Lost In Space’ has driven large amounts of traffic to this blog. Wonder and spectacle are the hallmarks of this series. I hope to continue publishing this wonderful series of articles… just as soon as I am feeling better.
  • FIVE HUNDRED Articles – #2 – The Mars Report : “Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. Today is a continuation of the celebration of the publication (lots o’ations… there) of my Five Hundredth Article here at The Other Shoe. Yesterday we celebrated this auspicious occasion with a review of ‘Lost In Space’! With less than one year in publication, this article series enjoys a large following and handsome traffic numbers. I greatly increased its readership and traffic numbers, two weeks ago, by starting the ‘Tour of Our Solar System’ mini-series.” This is the second article of this celebratory series of articles, showcasing the terribly popular article series ‘The Mars Report’! My Dear Readers, “The Mars Report’ is the single most popular science based article series ever, for this blog. Over the past two years this single article series has driven thousands of readers to this blog. Combining cutting edge science with incredible and breathtaking images from Mars, this article series is one of the linchpins of my blog(s) and written works. Each week I publish this article it beings me tremendous pride and joy to thousands of readers.
  • FIVE HUNDRED Articles – Part Three – MMORPGs And YOU! : “Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. Here we are, My Dear Readers, well into our ‘Celebration and Review’ in honor of the publication of my Five Hundredth Article here at The Other Shoe. I really feel that I am hitting my stride, with this series. Especially since, yesterday, I spent most of the day; with my head in one imaging tube or another, getting off or on various and sundry mass transit and getting any number of steel needles plunged into the veins in both arms. There is a very good reason I avoid; doctors, hospitals and all medical facilities. Seems once they have me in their grasp… they just do not want to let me go!” Now, My Dear Readers, we come to the crux of my writing and my love! I just love playing GAMES! Right now MMORPGs are my favorite genre of game to play. I am very fortunate that I still have a working ‘Gaming PC’, as this affords me the opportunity to play these wonderful games. Just recently I was given a present… the newest MMORPG – ‘Elder Scrolls Online’! I have been playing the game and this week I am going to make w few In-Game Videos to share right here with you! I am putting together the videos and some ingame screenshots so that I can share with you, My Dear Readers, the wonder that is this new game. This (the THIRD) review article is all about the wonderful article series ‘MMORPGs and YOU!’.
  • FIVE HUNDRED ARTICLES – Part Four – Politics and Editorial(s) : “Nothing highlights this more than two occasions when words I wrote found voice on a nationally viewed political news show. Most Americans will live out their entire lives without once their words reaching beyond the limits of their personal world. A handful, even a smaller group than previously mentioned, will have the honor and privilege to hear words they wrote spoken on a national broadcast television show. On July 31st, 2011 I (Daniel Hanning) joined that small and vocal group of Americans.” TWICE, in my short life, I have had the great honor to hear MY WORDS SPOKEN on national television. This article is a celebration and review of the articles I wrote to celebrate the occasion of my words on national television. Just check out this article and it will tell you all about my moments of pride.
  • FIVE HUNDRED ARTICLES – Part FIVE – The Horror in Smithville : “Now, My Dear Readers, I have always wanted to pen horror. Since a boy, reading horror stories late at night under the covers of my bed, desperate to not have my mother find out just what I was reading. I have yearned to write and publish a work of the horror genre. Today, I can cross that off my ‘Bucket List’! Not only have I wrote and published a work of horror… if I may say so myself… I have delved deep into the dark and murky waters of horror itself.” Horror! In all the years I have written, I have always wanted to write horror. Long have I longed for the challenge that is writing in the genre of horror. Now… I have! This article series is the most recent addition to my blog. The most recent and the most talked about, by far! In the coming weeks, and months, Timmy and Archer will take us on a journey to other worlds, other places, and bear witness to great suffering and horror. We last left, our intrepid heroes, Timmy lay unconscious in Archer’s lap. We left the story with Timmy’s father driving (rather recklessly, I might add) the trio (Timmy, Archer and Timmy’s Dad) to the Smithville County Hospital. Timmy had been (what appears as) severely beaten by the ‘school bully’ (I have often wondered… WHY? In our modern society… with school shootings and incredible scholastic standards putting tremendous pressure son children… WHY is it that we still allow ‘School Bulllies’? Certainly we can eradicate them via incarcerartion of violent offenders in ALL grades… RIGHT? Why don’t we DO that and be RID of them? ). This week… if I am feeling up to it… I will publish the next installment of this wonderful horror serial. I, really have about twenty pages already written… It is just a matter of proofing the pages, uploading and publishing. I am hoping that I feel ‘up’ to that task, later this week.

.

That, My Dear Readers, brings us to the end of this week’s review… and brings us to the end of the ‘FIVE HUNDREDTH Article a Celebration and Review’. Over the past week I have worked, very had, to present an overview of the past five hundred articles, and four years, here at ‘The Other Shoe’. I have worked, every single week… through much pain and suffering, to bring the very best I have to offer. I do not have ‘a staff’… writers… assistants… publishers… an editor. Each and every week what you see is what I have managed to write, edit and publish… solo!

.

Many weeks, like last week, I work through great waves of pain. My Dear Readers, I am not just so sure that I can continue. I just love writing… and I just love ‘seeing’ the traffic numbers… the ‘Visit Counter’ (on the blog) goes from 10… to 20… to 30… to 50! Yes, when it (and it does) hit FIFTY! I am so very deeply moved! Moved that fifty people, every week, are dropping by and READING MY WORK!

.

So, I am sure you understand how… when, this week, I see the counter at ten. I am deeply depressed and heart broken. To expend so much effort… to endure so much pain and see my traffic fall? It just breaks my heart. I know that the blog’s web master… the server are having “problems”. I see that I cannot, or have real problems publishing… Still… it hurts.

.

I am going to get some rest, later today. Rest and consider… if I am to continue… I want to go on and write and publish… another Five Hundred articles. I want to write for another four to five years. AM I a ‘terrible person’ for wanting… longing for… needing… recognition? That is all I have ever asked… that is all I have ever desired.

.

I hope that everyone has enjoyed this ‘Look Back’ at the past Five Hundred Articles here at ‘The Other Shoe’.

.

Adieu!

.

Thank YOU!

FIVE HUNDRED Articles – Part Three – MMORPGs And YOU!

Enzomatrix/Danny On Ice Planet Hoth

.

Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. Seems once they have me in their grasp… they just do not want to let me go!

.

Regardless of my exciting and terrifying adventures, yesterday, I still managed to; write, publish and promote ‘500 Articles – Part Two – The Mars Report’. Honestly? I was very proud of just how that article came out! I covered the beginning, the middle and the end (most recent) of the series and included some of the best ‘news making days’ of both Opportunity and Curiosity. Even better? Their/OUR journey, with ‘The Mars Report’, is far from over! In the coming weeks, months and years I hope to keep promoting and sharing the best moments, the best images and the real science that takes place with these intrepid adventurers on the Martian surface.

.

Now, as a reward for going through all the… painful and humiliating tests and exams yesterday. I promised myself that for today I would reward myself by making today’s (Wednesday’s) edition of this series about something I really enjoy! Yes, My Dear Readers, that means that today we will be looking back on, reviewing and celebrating the most fun filled of all my series… ‘MMORPGs and YOU!’

.

These games put a smile on my face, and are the way I most enjoy spending my spare time. My Dear Readers, that statement was mostly true… as far back as I can remember. However, now… now, with my current… shortcomings these games have only increased in desirability. You see, My Dear Readers, in real life I can… no longer… run, jump, dance, play and use my body the way I was accustomed. Yet… once I am in these games? I CAN; run, skip, jump, hop, ride horses, dance and PLAY to my heart’s content.

.

These MMORPGs give me a freedom of action… a freedom of ability that I truly lack (with my current disabilities) in the Real World. I can long into World of Warcraft and hop onto a horse and take it for a ride! I can ride for a few minutes… I can ride it for a few hours! I can go fishing, fight ‘Bad Guys’, cast spells, and even DANCE! I have a freedom of movement that I sorely lack in this real world. So, now, these MMORPGs have all the appeal they had in the 80’s… PLUS they now replace a quality of life!

.

So, having been a ‘Good Boy’ yesterday and not biting anyone, or striking out at anyone, or taking out my pain and suffering on anyone. I have decided I will reward myself by spending today; writing, talking and sharing these games I so dearly love and enjoy. I am going to share all of the current reviews of these games, today. Now, sometime next week I hope to be adding to the article series ‘MMORPGs and YOU!’. I am hoping to add another article all about ‘Elder Scrolls Online’! This is the most recent MMORPG to be released.

.

Now, without further adieu I give you ‘MMORPGs And YOU!’ for this the third part of ‘Five Hundred Articles – A Celebration and Review’ right here at The Other Shoe!

.

  • (Enzomatrix in His Second Home – Rift)

  • · MMORPG(s) and YOU – 1st Edition – Rift : Rift was born of a culture already brimming with MMORPGs. There was the primary MMORPGs like; WoW and Everquest. The next tier of MMOs would include; Aion, Rift, Lord of the Rings Online, and Star Trek Online. These round out the middle of the market. Next would be the user designed games like; Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2.”I had no idea, when I wrote those words, that over the next six months I would write an article about nearly every one of those games. Little did I know that Rift would end up being the jumping off point for the single largest and most popular series of articles I ever published at The Other Shoe. I still play Rift, though with my left hand spending most waking hours with a hot pack wrapped around it, I do not play Rift nearly as much as I would like.

  • · MMORPGs And You! – Part Two – Age of Conan: “The game that you’ve been seeing pictures and videos, above, are from the MMORPG ‘Age of Conan’. This MMORPG is based in the world of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. As well, a lot of the characters the plot lines the story are lifted from the movie series starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. If, My Dear Readers, you enjoyed in the works of Doyle or the movies of Arnold Schwarzenegger this MMORPG is the one for you!” Once I saw that the article on Rift had garnered twenty-something ‘Likes’ I knew that I was on to something worth spending time writing and publishing. As well, getting the screenshots and in game videos was getting back in game with some of my favorite games. When I wrote this article, I had not played Age of Conan since it went to a Free-to-Play format. There were a great many changes. Some I did not like, but the vast majority I found enhanced the game play.

  • · MMORPGs and YOU! – Part Three – Aion : “Now when I tell you that Aion it is a stylized what I mean to say is that every character in the game is beautiful and dressed in fine silken garments. For guys, if you have issues with your masculinity then this might not be the game for you. If you have uncomfortable thoughts, when looking at attractive guys and men, this game is not for you. However, if you like looking at beautiful men and women dressed in fine garments and beautiful armor? Well then, Aion is the game for you! If the attractiveness of yourself and your fellow gamers is just a non-issue for you? Then this is the game for you, too!” Of all the MMORPGs that I shared with you, My Dear Readers, Aion is the single most stylized. Designed by, and for, the target audience of South Koreans this game is as distinctive as it is dynamic. In no other MMORPG I have ever played do you grow wings and fly! The costumes and armor are flowing garments seemingly made of gossamer. This game is not for everyone, but those who do take a venture into this realm will be greatly rewarded for their efforts. I would have to rate this game in my ‘Top Five’ of the genre.

  • · MMORPGs And YOU! – Part Four – Guild Wars 2 : “Welcome back, My Dear Readers, to The Other Shoe and another edition of ‘MMORPGs and YOU!’. Let me first take a moment to say “Thank You!” to all of you who have been reblogging this series all over the net. It is really quite flattering, and humbling to, to see this sign of appreciation of my work. I have been writing, here at The Other Shoe, for nearly 3 years and this is the first time I had one of My Dear Readers share my work with others. Again, thank you.” And, there it is, the highlight of my blogging life… right there in print. After nearly three years of writing I was finally seeing my work published at other blogs. Oh, at this point Bob Shieffer had already used my words on NATIONAL TV but… this was a very important moment in my life of blogging. This game, ‘Guild Wars 2’ had an advantage over all of the other MMORPGs that I shared with you, My Dear Readers. It was the SECOND game of the same title. This gave this MMORPG a distinct advantage over all of the other games I shared of this genre. This game is completely ‘Free-to-Play’ with no strings attached and is still played by millions each and every day. I still have it installed on my gaming computer, and at times I still play this game. It is a very enjoyable franchise.

  • · MMORPGs And YOU! – Part Five – Star Trek On Line : “Welcome back, My Dear Readers, to the Fifth edition of ‘MMORPGs And YOU!. Welcome to Part Five – Star Trek On Line. This edition, based on the Star Trek Intellectual Property seems to be timed by a larger force. Perfect Worldis the current keeper of this storied franchise. This title saw several hands during its creation and birth, but Perfect World finally brought it to the world, and spent the last two years refining STOL.” Of ALL the MMORPGs that I have shared, and played, this game had the single most difficult birth and launch. Of course, when you are dealing with an intellectual property with a history as long as the Star Trek world you are bound to have problems. I remember watching the inception and creation of the game for YEARS! Nearly a decade was spent brining this franchise to this genre. There were more people and hands involved in the creation of this game than any other MMROPG in history. Only to have its ten year conception and birth to be followed by one of (not the worst) single most difficult launches I have seen since World of Warcraft. IF you enjoy ANY of the storylines of this franchise, you WILL enjoy this MMORPG. ALL of the different TV series and movies are represented in this game. IF you like Star Trek, then you simply cannot miss out on playing this game!

  • · MMORPGs And YOU! – Part Six – Star Wars The Old Republic : “Lucas Arts excelled at that bringing a pioneering gaming moment to gamers just like me. The MMORPG ‘Star Wars – The Old Republic’ delivers a like experience. For sound (music) you have John Williams playing in your ears throughout the entire game. Everywhere you go, everywhere you fight and die… there’s John Williams playing in the background in huge orchestral style. It makes key moments, in the game, seem almost cinematic. See, right there… that is what Lucas Arts did with games. Lucas Arts made games that were larger than life.” If one ever needed proof that MMORPGs are THE gaming genre of the 21st century, you need look no further than these last two titles. Here are the two most successful Sci-Fi franchises in history, both represented in an MMORPG. Yes, there were PC Games from both of these storied franchises, but never before have two science fiction series been better rendered into reality. I consider myself fortunate to have been able top play both of these games. Writing this article, I do realize that coming only second to writing and publication, playing MMORPGs are my favorite past time. I watched the movies. I read the books. However, until you install one of these games you never really enter these worlds. This MMORPG is a great game, and great play and an investment in interactive entertainment.

  • · MMORPGs And YOU! Final Fantasy XIV – A Realm Reborn : “Now, My Dear Readers, I have been playing this storied franchise since the original Nintendo gaming system. I’m not talking about the Super Nintendo or the N64 I am talking about the original eight bit Nintendo gaming system. I’ve been playing this franchise for the better part of 25 years. Not only that, but I had the opportunity to be a Beta tester for Final Fantasy XI and XIV. I also played, extensively, this game before its redesign and “rebirth”. This gives me a unique perspective on this Realm Reborn version of this massively multiplayer online role-playing game.” Earlier, when writing about Guild Wars 2, I mentioned who that game had an advantage in that it was the second MMORPG of the same franchise… and that it was alone in that regard. I totally forgot about Final Fantasy, for good reason. Final Fantasy XI (11) was the very first MMORPG for the Final Fantasy franchise. However, 11 was just so bad… for the majority of gamers, that it just slipped my mind. Further, though few people outside gaming know Final Fantasy, this franchise now has over FORUTEEN titles. I remember playing this franchise on the Nintendo (original) gaming console… many many years ago. This MMORPG is still a little buggy, and I had hoped to still be playing… However, my membership lapsed just the other day and I am in no position to afford to renew my subscription. Still, this is a good MMORPG, not of the ease of play of WoW or Guild Wars 2, it is still a good game belonging to a great franchise.

  • (Enzomatrix Riding Rocket Mount in World of Warcraft)

  • · MMORPGs And YOU! – World Of Warcraft : “Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. This is the eighth article of this series ‘MMORPGs and YOU!’ here atThe Other Shoe. Since the very first article of this series I have wanted to bring you screenshots and video of game play inWorld of Warcraft. However, it was not until this week that, through the kindness of an online friend, I had access to my World of Warcraft account. I was given a ‘Scroll of Resurrection’ from a good friend of mine in World of Warcraft. This ‘Scroll of Resurrection’ can be given to any player who’s been away from the game for more than three months to, quite literally, bring them back to life in the game.” Strong and found memories, I have for this title. This was the very first MMORPG that I ever played. Just thinking of this game brings back such strong and detailed memories. Yes, World of Warcraft has a very bumpy launch. However, it was the very first of the ‘Mega’ MMORPGs and still has the record for largest subscription base in the history of the genre. At one point, this title, all by itself, aided the ‘Gaming’ to eclipse MOVIES in gross profits. Yes, it was the 12 MILLION subscription member base that catapulted Blizzard from a small company to being bought and sold… and in so doing making and breaking whole corporations. Now, the game’s subscription base is much smaller. Less than half of what it was in its heyday. It is still ‘One-of-A-Kind’ among MMORPGs. This IS the game I think of playing, most often, when I long to play an MMORPG… again. Writing about WoW… makes me want to be able to play it, today.

  • World of Warcraft – Warlords of Draenor : “Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. As promised, I am here today to bring you the scoop on the newest edition to the storied MMORPG franchise, ‘World of Warcraft’! That’s right today you will get a peak at the upcoming expansion ‘Warlords of Draenor’. First, to get a little of the legal mumbo jumbo out of the way, ALL materials shared here are copyright of Blizzard Entertainment and not property of The Other Shoe. That means, I am just here to share what is already readily available at the web site I linked above. I am not to break any news, or share anything new.” This is the fifth expansion to the single most; played, famous, profitable, and recognized MMORPG in the WORLD! I started playing WoW in January of 2004, and have only taken short breaks from playing over the past decade. I played 24/7/365 in the first years and, as a result, have a very rare title ‘Lieutenant Commander’! It was a ‘Battlefield Commission’ that I earned during the ‘Burning Crusades’ expansion… often playing the PvP ‘Alertec Valley’. Since my neurological disease has progressed and now has done serious damage to my use of my left hand, I do not participate in PvP anymore. I just am too slow with the W-A-S-D keys and that makes for easy pickings for the Horde. I, like many others, am eagerly anticipating this upcoming expansion. That is why I choose to include this article in the Five Hundredth Article Celebration and Review. I hope to meet up with some of you, My Dear Readers, in WoW. I am on the Alexstraza Server, Alliance side, EnzoMatrix, EnzomatrixLT, EnzomatrixDK, Goodgulf, and Devonshire. Drop by and give me a shout… Oh, yeah, and I am Champion and Founder of the Guild – ‘Legion of Dragonslayers’. Hope to see you there, soon!

  • · MMORPGs And YOU! – Requiem : “Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. Today I present number Nine in my ridiculously popular series ‘MMORPGs And YOU!’ Requiem. Requiemis a FTP (Free-To-Play) MMORPG that launched in June of 2008 by Gravity LTD. Gravityis game developer located in South Korea and is known for such titles as; Ragnorok On Line, Dragonsaga, Steal Fighter, and Requiem. I was still writing for a gaming web site, as Lead Gaming Writer and Editor, when Requiem went into Beta.” The ninth, and final, MMORPG in this series of articles. This ‘horror based’ MMORPG occupies a special place in my collection of games of this genre. I was contacted by the development team and offered a (much desired) opening in the Closed Beta in exchange for exposure on our web site. I, of course, jumped at the chance to get into (yet another) Beta and had the opportunity to help guide the final development of this game. IF you like horror movies and you want a VERY easy MMORPG to download and play? You need go NO further than the web page for this title. It can be downloaded, and updated, in just a couple of hours. It is completely ‘Free-to-Play’ and you will be involved and flying by dinnertime. I heartily indorse this game, and still play it myself, from time to time. IF you decide to check it out, let me know. There is only ONE server, and I would be happy to show you hoe to play.

Well, My Dear Readers, that brings us to the end of today’s ‘Celebration and Review – FIVE HUNDREDTH Article’ for The Other Shoe. Now if you are one of My Dear Readers from three to four years ago? You will have seen this article series when it was originally published, and you will notice that I have made several improvements! I have taken more time, this time, to integrate the screenshot images and the in-game videos.

.

As well, I have combined two different conclusion articles so that I now have the best of two worlds (so to speak) in this the completed conclusion! I have done my best to make sure I included all of the MMORPGs that I reviewed for this series. Remember, later next week I will be working to publish another edition (addition) to this series! I will be writing and publishing a review for the ‘Brand New’ MMORPG – ‘Elder Scrolls – Online’! I am, now, recording the videos and taking the in game screenshots, as I play the first ten levels of the game.

.

My Dear Readers, I simply cannot put into words the; excitement, happiness, pride and humility that comes with the publication of the FIVE HUNDERDTH ARTICLE right here at The Other Shoe! I am rather surprised that, after nearly five years, that I am still writing and publishing for this blog. I never thought that I would continue and continue and continue to write and publish. Never thought that I would be celebrating Five Hundred articles published!

.

I just could not have done this without you, My Dear Readers! Your readership is my strength, your ‘Likes’ are wind beneath my wings, your ‘Shares’ my reason to get up out of bed and keep trying to walk… facing the pain!

.

Adieu!

Danny Hanning of The Other Shoe – May 6th, 2014

A Week in Review – June 7th 2014

Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. Well, it seems for the very first time in many weeks I have written and published enough articles to merit this weekend review! This will come as a surprise to some, and a comfort to others. Myself, I am a big fan of regularity, things happening each and every week like clockwork. My father used to have a saying ‘Consistency is the hobgoblin of small minds.’ Meaning, only people with small minds dislike a world of consistencies, and I agree.

.

As well, this week saw a return of varied and different topics for the articles I published. We had everything from World News to PC Gaming and the return of ‘MMORPGs And YOU!’. Truth be told, that article is likely to see another return either next week or the week after. If you follow me on Facebook (Danny Hanning on Facebook) then you will know that I have updated and returned to ‘SWtOR’ = ‘Star Wars the Old Republic’ the on line MMORPG based on the wonderful intellectual property of Lucas arts. They had added an all new feature to the game, that I think will find wide appeal, and I am going to publish an update to the article (here) to include this all new feature.

.

Well, now I think that is just about enough teasing and spoilers before the actual article. At this point, either you are going to go ahead and read this article, or you have already clicked through to some other destination. So, without further adieu, I bring you ‘A Week in Review’!

.

  • New From Around the World – May 31st, 2014 : “Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. Today is Friday May 31st, 2014, TGiF to everyone! With the first weekend, since my blog disappeared, rapidly approaching I have been searching my brain for just what content might peak interest by you, My Dear Readers. First, I thought of presenting Part TEN of ‘The Horror in Smithville’ for your reading pleasure.” Here is a perfect example of what I was talking about, this article is a double edged sword. I start out talking about social inequalities (from around the world) that have occurred in just the past week, and then I quietly segway into financial inequality. You see, My Dear Readers, I will likely never tire of writing about the grave and widening gap between our (now) ‘Two Class’ system. Gone are the days of the ‘Middle Class’, today you either struggle ‘hand-to-mouth’ making it paycheck to paycheck, or you have so much disposable income you have to buy symbols of ‘vulgar displays of wealth’. In the month of May, Pope Francis had the courage of his convictions to tell the leaders of this world that the time has come for a “legitimate redistribution of wealth”. The Pope has hit the nail on the head, and with one breath has set in motion forces that will, in time, level financial inequality once and for all. Want to know ‘why’ I say that, you will have to read this article.
  • MMORPGS And YOU! – July 1st, 2014 Republication : “Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. Today is Sunday June 1st, 2014 and I have decided to reblog/republish one of my single most popular article series ever. ‘MMORPs And YOU!’ managed to set a new record for the number of ‘Likes’, greatly increased traffic and was one of the very first of my articles to ever be ‘reblogged’ (posted by other blogger to their site). It is taking a little more time to get back into the habit of writing every single day… well, that is only partially true. I am not having any difficulty writing ‘The Horror in Smithville’… I am already done with Part TEN and am working on Part ELEVEN!” As I mentioned in the forward above, more than one MMORPG is seeking to increase membership by adding “all new” features to their games. In this case, World of Warcraft is adding another whole new continent with the upcoming expansion. ‘Warlords of Draenor’ looks to be a wonderful expansion of the world of Azeroth, and the game. Rather than just throw the particulars of the new expansion at You, My Dear readers, I went back and republished two of the previous articles from the series ‘MMORPGS And YOU!’. Take a moment and take a look, it will be time wells spent I assure you!
  • MMORPGs and YOU! – World of Warcraft – Republication : “Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. Today is Sunday June 1st, 2014, and today I am here to share a previously published article. The reason fort his republication is simple, World of Warcraft is about to release another expansion to their game content. Earlier, this year, I published a very well received series of articles titled ‘MMORPGs And YOU!’ right here at The Other Shoe. Having said, I just feel I would remiss if I failed to update you, My Dear Readers, with regard to the newest expansion of content.” This is the second in the triad of articles I published, this week, to help herald the upcoming expansion to ‘World of Warcraft’. This is the article, out of the series, that I devoted just to WoW. It includes several in game screenshots and in game videos, too! Now, My Dear Readers, if you haven’t already read this article, this week, and/or you were not a visitor or Reader when this article was originally published, now would be a great time to check it out!
I am not to break any news, or share anything new.” Here we are! This is the article, the last of the triad, that is all about the all new expansion to WoW. I share many in game screen shots, a listing of many of the new features and upgrades, and a little of the back story behind the expansion. It is a great read and well worth the time and effort to learn all about the upcoming expansion. ENJOY!
  • The Mars Report – June 4th, 2014 : “Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. It has been more than a week since I wrote, and published, an edition of ‘The Mars Report’. However, today’s edition just could not have come at a better time. For those of us that, daily, look to the stars and dream of living in outer space or another planet? A report from the National Research Council (named ‘Pathways to Exploration: Rationales and Approaches for a U.S. Program of Human Space Exploration’) outlines the genuine necessity of planetary exploration and colonization, a goal, which I have strong, and positive feelings about.” Now, this article is quite a departure for me. This is not the regular edition of ‘The Mars Report’. It does not contain ‘eyecandy’ from the surface of Mars, or science experiments from Curiosity. In this article I review a report, required by Congress paid for my NASA and compiled by the National Research Council. This report is very important to the future of American’s space program, our goal of landing a man on Mars, and the very future and life of our species. If you haven’t guessed it, this article is a ‘Must Read’!
  • The Horror in Smithville – Part TEN : “Now, just as soon as the words “will be taken home early” were spoken the entire student body broke out into cheers and applause. Archer was pretty darn sure that the principal was not finished speaking. Pretty sure that there might have been even more important instructions for the students and the staff. Yet, everything was lost to the din of cheers and applause. Archer had stood up, like everyone else, and was clapping his hands frantically. Timmy, on the other hand, had no energy to get up and stand much less applaud an on coming snow storm. Timmy sat there, quietly, wondering if any of the children applauding right now had done the long math on this situation.” And, with that, you get all you are going to as a preview to this the TENTH episode of ‘The Horror in Smithville’. I am very happy with the following this article has garnered, and very happy with the direction the story is taking… us. Want to know more??? Quite simply, you will just have to read… and enjoy!
  • The Mars Report – June 6th, 2014 : “Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. I apologize for the delay in the publication of this edition of ‘The Mars Report’. I have, yet, to write about it but my health is giving my fits and starts. For three days, this week, I had golf balls under my armpits, and fevers that would come and go within a day. I desperately need to get to my doctors, but I am unable to do so by myself. Anywho, I am here now and I have a pretty incredible edition of ‘The Mars Report” for everyone to read and enjoy.” Now, My Dear Readers, this is the edition of “The Mars Report’ that everyone is used to! This edition contains many new images from the surface of Mars. As well, there is a bit of a surprise in this article. NASA/JPL have crossed a milestone in extraplanatery exploration and I chronicle that achievement in this article. Want to know what happened? Read!

.

With that, My Dear Readers, we come to the end of this weekly review. In this week I managed (in spite of serious health problems) to publish another seven articles. Now, I didn’t take the time to celebrate this milestone… but this week?!?! I published my 475th article!! That’s right four hundred and seventy-five articles in less than five years!

.

I am very proud of this accomplishment, and if I had been feeling better I would have written and celebratory article and posted all over Facebook about the milestone. AS a matter of fact… … later today (Saturday)… I might just go ahead and do just that! It does merit some attention and accolades! So, look out for later today… in a couple of hours, for a special posting on Facebook to celebrate my publication of the 475th article here at ‘The Other Shoe’!

.

Well, MY Dear Readers, that brings us to the end of this week and the end of this article. As always, it has been my honor to bring another seven articles to this blog for your reading pleasure. I hope that everyone enjoys the faire I have wrought, and takes the time to read and enjoy as many and as much of this week’s work as brings you pleasure.

.

I know that not everything I write will appeal to every single reader. As a matter of fact… I am fearful that this week’s ‘News From Around the World’ might rub some of my readers the wrong way. If it has, I sincerely apologize. You see, MY Dear Readers, it is never my intent to offend. It is always my intent to expand intellectual horizons. This is the reason for my blog having articles from many different genres. Most blogs cover one topic, one type of story and have one kind of reader.

.

I wanted more than that, and I wanted readers that enjoyed an ever-expanding realm of understanding. Thirsted for more than a mono-culture. This is my trademark… my hook, as it were. My Dear Readers, thank you for coming by and taking the time to read my work. You do me a great honor, and I hope that I show adequate respect for that honor.

.

Adieu!

.

Thank YOU!

MMORPGs and YOU! – World of Warcraft – Republication

.

World Map _ World of Warcraft Azeroth

World Map _ World of Warcraft Azeroth

Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. Having said, I just feel I would remiss if I failed to update you, My Dear Readers, with regard to the newest expansion of content.

.

Since the second year after the release of the core game, now referred to as ‘Vanilla’, Blizzard has regularly expanded the virtual world with the release of expansions. The very first of these expansions was ‘Burning Crusade’ back in January 2007. Their next expansion of content was labeled ‘Wrath of the Lich King’ was released November 18th, 2008. Notice that the release dates, between these two expansions, was greatly accelerated .

.

Next, at Blizzcon 2009, the next expansion named ‘Cataclysm’ later the release date was announced as December 7th, 2010. Another years passed and on the occasion of the second ‘Blizzcon’ (since Cataclysm was announced) Blizzard announced the next (and most recent) expansion, ‘Mists of Panderia’. ‘Panderia’ was released to the general public September 25th, 2012. That, My Dear Readers, brings us to today.

.

On November 8th, 2013 Blizzard announced the next expansion for ‘World of Warcraft’ to be named ‘Warlords of Dreanor’ with the release date set for December 20th, 2014. (Four years, thirteen days since ‘Cataclysm’). It is that expansion, that is the reason, for my republication of the ‘Conclusion’ to the article series ‘MMORPGs And YOU!’ and this republication of the article for ‘World of Warcraft’. Later this week I will be writing and publishing one whole article devoted to presenting you, My Dear Readers, with information, screenshots, details and a video explaining the upcoming expansion.

.

So, now without further adieu I bring you my original work for this storied franchise… ‘World of Warcraft’!

.

Danny at Stormwind Gates after Dragon Attack

Danny at Stormwind Gates after Dragon Attack

Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. This ‘Scroll of Resurrection’ can be given to any player who’s been away from the game for more than three months to, quite literally, bring them back to life in the game.

.

So for the next seven days I have access to all the characters on my account, there are seven characters in all. I will not be able to show screen snapshots or give video for all of my characters. So I have picked to of my favorite characters to play and throughout this articles you will see screenshots and in game videos of these two ‘toons’. The past three days have been set spent taking screenshots and making videos. At the end of each day I sort through the screenshots and videos to find the ones that show the most and look the best for this article today.

.

.

For anyone that is thinking of expanding their PC gaming experience to a new genre. Or for anyone thinking of making their first venture in PC gaming the genre of massively multiplayer online role-playing games. World of Warcraftis quite definitely the game for you. My Dear Readers I played in many role-playing games, both on personal computers and in board games, previous to my introduction to this now world-famous game. First, a bit of irony. World of Warcraftmade its world debut November 23, 2004. November 23 is just three days after my birthday. However, in 2004… At the time of my birthday, I was not able to afford to purchase World of Warcraft.

.

It was not until January 4 of 2005 and then I finally made my entry into this wonderful game. Unfortunately when I started playing there were huge lines, one had to wait in, just to get in and play your character. Often you would get kicked from the server, sometimes at very and opportune moments. I remember I was in the very first dungeon that I never played in World of Warcraft. The name of this instance is Deadmines. If you pick either human or dwarf for your first character this will, most likely be, the first instance you encounter.

.

Now, My Dear Readers, I could spend hours upon hours writing basically a died to play of this game. I do not want to do that, instead I would like to introduce you to the game give you a little bit of the language the game show you pictures from the game in the videos. At the end of it all more than anything I would’ve liked to have peaked your interest in playing this MMORPG. Quite truthfully, nothing would make me happier than encountering one of you in Azeroth.

.

World Map _ World of Warcraft Azeroth

World Map _ World of Warcraft Azeroth

(Azeroth – The World of Warcraft world)

.

At the time this article was written there are four continents in Azeroth. They are; Kalimdor, the Eastern Kingdoms (where Humans and Dwarfs begin), Northrend and Pandaria. The next thing you will need to know is that this world is started out, in the very first game, (which in now referred to as Vanilla) with a just the continent of Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms. The continent to the north, Northrend, was added in the Wrath of the Lich King expansion and Pandaria was added most recently. There have been four expansions to this world.

.

.

The very first expansion to this game was released in January 2007, named ‘The Burning Crusade’. The next expansion was released in November 2008, named ‘Wrath of the Lich King’. The third expansion was released in December 2010 and was named ‘Cataclysm’. The fourth expansion, ‘Mists of Panderia’, was released September 2012. There is a fifth expansion planned, named ‘Warlords of Draenor’. I do not have the release date of this expansion. With each expansion the world of Azeroth has been an enlarged and the level cap has been increased.

.

Each character, known in the game as a toon, grows with experience. The experience you gain as measured in levels. The original game, Vanilla, had a level cap of 60. With the most recent expansion you can now level your toon up to level ninety. Currently I do not have a level ninety toon. One of the few things that I’ve really wanted this year, for Christmas, was a extension of my membership to this game. With me not working, Allen being knowingly person in the house working, and me only bringing in a little over $900 a month I just… I just cannot justify the $15 a month subscription fee to continue playing the game. It is a sacrifice I willingly make so that my family has more money for food and the things we need.

.

.

There is a reason this game, at one point, had 12 million subscribers. There is a reason that even though there are literally dozens of MMORPGs on the market several million people continue playing this game. As well, whenever I think of playing an MMORPG World of Warcraftis the one I have the most desire to play again in the best memories of playing. One of the reasons for the great success of this intellectual property is that it contains elements from fantasy, steam punk, and science fiction. There is, quite literally, something for everyone in this game. If you like rolling hills, forests, babbling brooks, blue rivers and sunny skies then you will most likely want to start out as a human. Your capital city is the grand city of Stormwind. Each race has their own capital city within the game.

.

Enzo Worgen Toon in Shattarath

Enzo Worgen Toon in Shattarath

.

There many races that make up this game. On the side of the Alliance you have; Humans, Dwarves, Draenei, Gnomes, Night Elves, Worgen, Tushui Panderaen and High Elves. On the side of the Horde you have; Orcs, Forsaken, Tauren, Trolls, Blood Elves, Goblins, Huojin Pandaren, and Orges. (For more information on these races you can look here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_of_warcraft_races#Humans)

.

If you are a darker person, or a ‘Goth’, then you will like one of the darker races like; the Worgen, Goblins or Gnomes. The best way to find out, if you’re interested in joining this fantasy realm, what race would fit you best would be to visit the link I have left above. One of the most interesting aspects of this game is that Alliance and Horde cannot understand each other speak. If you are a human, for instance, and you are in a PvP (Person vs. Person) battle with an orc you will not understand a single word they yell at you. And, they will yell at you. The same goes for the Horde side, too. When we speak to each other, in these battles, they cannot understand what we say, either.

.

.

This adds to the mystery of the game but also serves a function. In these battles where players battle each other we cannot understand them discuss their battle plans nor that can they understand us discuss hours. The next major choice you need to make will be what type of server you would like to play. There are two basic types of servers. There are Player vs. Environment and Player vs. Player servers in the game. In the Player vs. Environment servers it is you, and your allies, playing against the wild creatures and ‘Bad elements’ of the world. In Player vs. Environment you cannot be attacked by a member of the opposing faction while casually playing. You must enter a PvP battleground prior to engaging in battle with the opposing faction. This means, that as a low level player, you cannot be ganked (overwhelmed by) members of the opposing faction going out to do quests.

.

.

On the other hand, in a PvE (Player vs. Environment) server you cannot get ganked. This is the major reason I have always played in a PvE server. However, this is the main reason that, some people, prefer the PvP servers. They like the thrill of confrontation, the allure of happenstance meetings with opposition parties and the possibility of death. I can completely understand why these people enjoy the PvP servers. I just happen to not be quite as quick, with my hands, as I used to be… and I enjoy tranquility when I play. If you are like me, not wanting to be jumped and killed at random, then you should pick a PvE server. If you like the thrills I have outlined above, then you should pick a PvP server. Each world has both kinds of servers. Currently all my toons are on the Alexstraza PvE Alliance server. If you would like to try this game, and honestly if you are a PC user and play games… well, you have no idea what all you are missing if you have never played. If you would like to play, I would be happy to show you around and help you get started. I am the Guild Master of the Guild ‘Legion of Dragon Slayers’. We have Guilds in; World of Warcraft, Rift and Aion (currently).

.

Enzomatrix on Dragon Mount

Enzomatrix on Dragon Mount

.

As well, right now is a very good time to start playing WoW. Right now you can have the base game and the first three expansions for ONLY $4.99. (Here: https://us.battle.net/shop/en/product/world-of-warcraft). There has never been a better time to get into this genre and this game. As I stated above you can find me (Enzomatrix, Enzomatrixlt, Goodgulf [from ‘Bored of the Rings], and Devonshire) on the; Alexstraza PvE Alliance server.

.

As always I am deeply honored that you come here and read my work.

Thank you!

MMORPGs Any YOU! – June 1st, 2014 Republication!

.

World Map _ World of Warcraft Azeroth

World Map _ World of Warcraft Azeroth

.

Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. Today is Sunday June 1st, 2014 and I have decided to reblog/republish one of my single most popular article series ever. ‘MMORPs And YOU!’ manged to set a new record for the number of ‘Likes’, greatly increased traffic and was one of the very first of my articles to ever be ‘reblogged’ (posted by other blogger to their site). It is taking a little more time to getback into the habit of writing every single day… well, that is only partialy true. I am not having any difficulty writing ‘The Horror in Smithville’… I am already done with Part TEN and am working on Part ELEVEN!.

.

There is a second reason that I am republishing this particular article series. World of Warcraft is about to release another expansion to the game. From what I have read, and the video I have seen, I really want to be a part of this expansion’s release. Therefore, I am going to; republish this Conclusion to the MMORPG series, republish the one article that deals with World of Warcraft, and then I am going to write an entirely new article that will cover just the new expansion. They have, already, released a video (I think I mentioned that fact), and I am waiting for approval to download and share the Media Packet Blizzard is providing to all media outlets

.

Of all the MMOPRGs I have had the pleasure to play, over the past ten years, World of Warcraft is the game of this genre that I just keep coming back to play. Just today I have leveled my primary toon to level 90! For now, that is the highest you can level any toon. World of Warcarft has it all; PvP, PvE, Dungeons, Instances, skills, cooking and GUILDS. In the decade that I have played this game I have witnessed; ENTIRE FAMILIES playing TOGETHER, Marriages (virtual), and some of the best darn gaming dynamics I have ever bore witness. Yes, as all things in life… there are people and Guilds that… well, (for the lack of a better word) are just A-Holes. But, they are few are far between.

.

Now, without further adieu, I bring you ‘MMORPGs And YOU – Conclusion’!

.

[This article was originally published Januray 4th, 2014]

.

Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. Now that I have both of my blog locations working properly, and I have a minute new medication I’m taking for my rheumatoid arthritis. I am ready to begin the process of catching up on publications. The two articles that I will be publishing this weekend were initially slated for the last week in December 2013. The first of these articles, and the one I will be publishing today (Saturday), is the conclusion of the most popular series of articles for 2013.

.

That series of articles, of course, is ‘MMORPGs And YOU!’. When I started this series, on June 24th 2013, I had no idea that it would span seven months and nine articles. Touting (compiled from all nine of the series) a grand total of 145 ‘Like’(s) this series was/is my greatest work to date. Hands down, the single most popular of the series was… … (drum roll, please)… … ‘Star Wars the Old Republic’ with thirty-six Likes total.

.

As is that was not enough, this series was the single most ‘reblogged’ of all my works to date. Carried by three other bloggers (at one point) these articles certainty are the epiphany of my abilities in 2013. As a ‘Tip of the Hat’ to this storied franchise I will revisit each and every of these fine articles here, today. I have been working on this homage for the past two weeks. At first I really wanted to include a screenshot and a video from each and every one of these fine articles. However, due to the temperamental nature of my primary blog’s server… and the growing pain in my left paw, I will be including only a screenshot with each synopsis.

.

If you would like to see some (or all) of the in game videos you need only follow the link (at the beginning of each synopsis) and visit the respective web page. FYI I made over thirty-six (three dozen) in game videos through the life of this series. Never before, and not since, have I spent as much time and effort on the production and publication of articles. I am very proud of this, my largest, body of work.

.

Now, without further adieu I bring you (in its entirety) ‘MMORPGs And YOU!’.

.

Well, My Dear Readers, that brings us to the very end of my favorite series of articles in the life of my blog… so far. This article has taken me… well, two weeks… off and on, to complete. PLEASE… consider ‘reblogging’… and ‘SHARING’. This is the ONLY way my work will see the light of day. I hope that you have enjoyed this compilation of my nine part series; MMORPGs And YOU!

As always, I am deeply honored that you come here and read my work.

The Deep Web – A Review of The First Three Issues

.

Access is FORBIDDEN The Deep Web

Access is FORBIDDEN The Deep Web

.

Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. Today, Friday, I have decided to take the time to review the first three issues of ‘The Deep Web’ prior to continuing with this series. From what I am seeing in my traffic reports, a good many of my current readers are ‘new’ readers. New to The Other Shoe. Having said, I think it prudent that I review the very first three issues so that these ‘new’ readers can catch-up on this series.

.

First, as I wrote and published in the first issue of this series I take no responsibility for your adventures on/in The Deep Web. FYI there are millions of Americans that have very safe and entertaining adventures in/on The Deep Web every single year. Conversely, every year there are many Americans that loose money, their identity, and even access to their bank accounts after just one visit to The Deep Web.

.

As with many aspects of adult life, fore warned is fore armed, and the better you prepare yourself and your computer before you connect to The Deep Web? The better the chance you have of not becoming a statistic, and/or victim. I really want all of you, My Dear Readers, to enjoy reading about this other web, I want you to explore if that is your desire. I just… really want everyone to be safe. As well, I accept no responsibility for any knarlly… yuda, yuda, yuda. (I have a good friend that is always cautioning me to write disclaimers… You know who you are J)

.

Now, just as soon as I have published this review of the first three articles in this series, I am going to write and publish the remaining issues. I have, yet, to share even more information and I want to relay to you some of my experiences in this other web. (Other web… at the Other shoe… how neat!)

.

Now, without further adieu I bring you ‘The Deep Web’ the Review!

.

  • Introduction to The Deep Web – Part One : “Welcome back My Dear Readers, to The Other Shoe. For many months now I have fought an internal battle, with myself. A battle that was not easily lost, nor won. A battle that, unfortunately, I (in some small way) will now hand over to you, My Dear Readers. The battle was/is one of conscience, in that I had to choose a course of action. The ‘high road’ would have left you, My Dear Readers, without knowledge and insight (from me at least) regarding a growing danger. Conversely, the ‘low road’ is the one where I explain to you, My Dear Readers, about this growing danger. In so doing, though, I expose you directly to this danger… and place in your hands the very crisis of conscience I have fought now for many months.” This was the very first article in the series. As such I did my best to introduce you, My Dear Readers, to the LARGER part of the web. You see everyone knows about the World Wide Web (www.), yet it is estimated that less than 20% of Americans (at the time this article was first released) even know of the existence of ‘The Deep Web’. That statistic is changing, and rapidly. I have read that nearly 200,000 new Americans are connecting to this other web each and every month. This is good, and this is bad. Good because this other web is more than 100 times LARGER than the WWW. Bad because venturing into this other web is far more dangerous, and requires much more diligence and understanding of; computers, networking, secure socket layers, computer security, and network security. This is not easy work, and not all Americans are suited for absorbing this knowledge. Those that do venture into this other web without proper preparation and precautions? Run a huge and real risk of having financial information stolen and/or their computer damaged. My writing this series was my attempt to prepare you, My Dear Readers, just in case you were tempted to venture into this other world.
  • The Deep Web – Part Two : “Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. Welcome back to my ongoing series about ‘The Deep Web’, Part Two. First, a little review of some of the material we have already covered. What is Tor? – Tor is an anonymizing browser meant to take advantage of an anonymizing network. This is meant to protect you, the end user, from piracy and hackers by routing your connection to the ‘Deep Web’ through bridges and concealing your IP address.” In this issue, My Dear Readers, I introduce you to the browser best used when venturing or adventuring into The Deep Web. I show you where you can go to download Tor. I explain how to run Tor, how to configure Tor, and how to connect using ‘Bridge Relays’. Further I explain to you all, My Dear Readers, the ‘Rules of the Road’ when venturing into this other web. I give you a lot of the ‘new’ nomenclature for this other web, and some very good words of warning. You see, My Dear Readers, the single best thing I can hope to accomplish is to instill in you, My Dear Readers, the genuine level of… concern… awareness… security awareness…. Paranoia to survive a healthy adventure into the other web.
  • The Deep Web – Part Three : “Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe and ‘Part Three’ of ‘The Deep Web’. My ongoing series about the other web, the darker side of the World Wide Web. Today I am going to talk to you, My Dear Readers about two new topics. First, I want to explain and discuss ‘Bridges’ to “The Deep Web’. Second, I want to explain and inform you, My Dear Readers, about creating a ‘virtual Machine’ on your computer as a means of protecting yourself and your computer.” In this issue I had two major objectives. First, I wanted to share with you, My Dear Readers, a scary tale of an old friend who ventures into this other web: A) Unprepared & B) WHILE ARE WORK! Talk about adding insult to injury. If he had been properly prepared, prior to connecting to the other web. Doing so at work would not have resulted in his termination of employment and he would have kept; his apartment, his wife, his car, and his ability to work in his chosen field. [I know this… because I was the one that caught him… and I was the one that ended up firing him… at my boss’s demand] I told a tale of how a young man with a bright future in IT lost that future, due in large part to hubris, because he connected to this other web at work on an unprotected computer placing the private personal information of hundreds of paying clients into the wrong hands. Second, I explained what bridge relays are, how to get a listing of them, and how to connect to this other web via a bridge relay. If your ISP (Internet Service Provider) has rules prohibiting you connecting to this other web, you can use bridge relays to bypass their software/hardware keeping you from connecting. Further, using private bridge relays can protect you for the prying eyes of; hackers, ‘Black Hats’, and all other kind of ‘Bad guys’ that lurk around this other web 24/7/365. As I have stated, repeatedly, My Dear Readers… IF you are going to adventure into this other web I want to do everything I can to help protect you from the (literally) millions of sharks swimming the waters of The Deep Web just waiting for ‘Newand unsuspectingsurfers. My Dear Readers, there is no reason that you should not be able to use and take advantage of, all that this other web has to offer. Just read my articles carefully, take all precautions and follow all directions and you should be safe.

.

Well now, My Dear Readers, which brings us to the very end of this review of the ‘The Deep Web’ @ The Other Shoe. I really hope that you have enjoyed this review, and that once you have read all three of the articles, you come back to read all the rest. Honestly, I never thought that I would ever be writing an article about this other web. Just five years ago, I wouldn’t even have mentioned (on line) that I knew about this other web. For fear that I might be investigated for; having terrorist ties, involved in identity theft, or suspect of trafficking in stolen or illegal goods.

.

Until recently that was pretty much the only reasons one would go to this other web, with any regularity. My Dear Readers, I can tell you truthfully that I have never been involved with any of the activities I just listed, above. Heck, I haven’t had so much as a speeding ticket in more than three decades! My best friend, of 27 years, calls me ‘The Last Boy Scout’… and with good reason.

.

Getting back on point, it is my desire to continue this article series next Friday. Next Friday you should see the fourth issue in this series, all about ‘Virtual Machines’. I will explain just what is a virtual machine, and how to set one up on your computer. I will have links to any needed software and I hope to have a step by step guide. AS well, I will explain just how a virtual machine will protect you as you venture or adventure in/on this other web. Finally, depending on the version of Windows, I will explain if it is really necessary for you to run a virtual machine for your protection. I look forward to bringing this information to you, one week from Friday.

.

It has been my pleasure, as always, to share this information and my time with you, My Dear Readers. Until you visit here, again…

.

Adieu!

.

Thank YOU!

Danny Hanning of The Other Shoe – May 6th, 2014

Coming This Week – March 30/31st, 2014

The Other Shoe's Daniel Hanning

The Other Shoe’s Daniel Hanning 2/2014

Welcome back My Dear Reader to The Other Shoe. Well now, I would usually write and publish this article on Monday. Yet, something just caught my eye, and I just had to share it with you, My Dear Readers. If you are reading this article on Sunday March 30th, 2014 (or have visited and read articles between Friday March 28th and Sunday March 30th), you are taking part in the single largest influx of visitors my blogs have ever seen. Yes, I have two locations for The Other Shoe. The primary blog located at blog.com and secondary located at wordpress.com. I saw secondary only because it was the second location of my blog launched. Remember, I do everything at both blog locations. Writing, editing, publishing, promotions… everything.

.

On Friday March 28th, the secondary location (at wordpress.com) reached an all time high at eighteen visitors in one day. The following day, March the 29th, my primary blog location (blog.com) had an all time high of twenty-two visitors in one day. Yes, I know… in the grand scheme of things… that is not a lot of visitors. Although, for a my blog… Well, I am proud to announce this news. See, I have Google Analytics monitoring my blog.com location and the sister location at WordPress provides their own analytics, that I check regularly. For those of you, My Dear Readers, that have been with me for awhile, two or more years out of the past four.

.

You will know that I used to publish a series of articles where I shared the results of the analytics. I did this for three years, then I just stopped. I am not too sure as to why. Honestly, it always felt a bit too much like… bragging. Showing off and… well, that is just not me. I am proud when my efforts merit. However, and you can ask anyone that I went to Middle, High School or college with… I do not like to brag, about myself.

.

I am very proud of the traffic I experienced this week, at both blogs. Now, I have worked extremely hard these past three weeks at writing and publishing quality content on a regular basis. Just over the past three weeks I have introduced FOUR new article series. I hope that it is these new articles series that are driving this increase in traffic, and not some factor that I cannot replicate.

.

Now, I would like to share with you, My Dear Readers, what I have planned for the coming week, here at The Other Shoe. Monday, would have… should have seen the publication of this article. However, since I wanted everyone to know (they are part of a historic weekend of traffic), I am not really sure exactly what I will write… tomorrow. I would not be surprised if you saw a new edition of ‘The Mars Report’ or ‘Lost in Space’. Let me tell you all that those two series are the most difficult for me to publish. Writing them is not very difficult. In fact, I greatly enjoy creating the narrative for the images I choose. It is the; downloading of, uploading of, embedding of, and choosing of these images that is quite difficult. I am not complaining, just explaining.

.

This week you, My Dear Readers, will be privy to; an all new episode of ‘The Horror in Smithville’. The boys have… fallen… yeah, right… ‘fallen’ to sleep… and we all know what happens when young boys fall asleepon a rainy night full of thunder and lightening. Next, you will be treated with a new edition of (both); ‘The Mars Report’ and ‘Lost in Space’. Well, that is what I have written right here in my day planner for writing. Yes, I have a writing schedule written out in my day planner.

.

Coming up next will be an all new issue of ‘The Deep Web’. This edition will get a bit more technical, and once done… you will be better prepared to venture into the dark and deep web than ever before. Finally, you will enjoy another episode of your regulars; ‘A Week in Review’ and ‘Sunday Funnies’. Now, I think that I have mentioned it before, I am looking for a political cartoonist. I simply cannot pay, but anyone that would like the practice and exposure for their work, I am looking for someone to add to my ‘Sunday Funnies’ with political cartoons.

.

That brings us to the end of the week of articles, and to the end of this preview of the coming week. FYI – Wednesday afternoon I do have a doctor’s appointment to look at a… ‘growth’ on my jawbone. If that goes poorly… it may negatively impact my writing schedule. However, if it goes well.. then I just might be of the temperament to write additional works not mentioned in this preview.

.

Well, My Dear Readers that brings us to the end of this week’s ‘Coming This Week’. I hope that you have all enjoyed the previews of what is to come… and I hope that you all enjoy the fact that (if you are here on Sunday) you, My Dear Readers, have been part of the single largest influx of visitor traffic in the history of my blogs.

.

As always I am deeply honored that you came here and read my work.

.

Thank YOU!

Forbidden Access _ The Deep Web

Forbidden Access – Cyber Terrorsits NOT Allowed!

.

.Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. Today is Friday, as such this (according to my all ‘new’ writing schedule) is a ‘free’ day. Meaning I leave the day open so that I can write what strikes me, or more on a story that has dominated the week’s news. Quite honestly? The missing airliner… while my thoughts and prayers go out to all those lost… I fear it might be months before we have any kind of closure… maybe even next year with the building winter season and winter weather rapidly closing in on the search teams.

.

The next two stories; the Ukrainian crisis, and the pseudo-conclusion to ‘Bridgegate’ have cannot build an entire article on either. The Ukrainian crisis has broken, in the favor of the European Union, America, Freedom, self-determination and the real Ukrainian people. Russian President blinked, today. He called President Obama, earlier this week, capitulating to Secretary Kerry’s overtures in the Netherlands. Honestly, winning a stacked) referendum that gave Russia the illusion of control over a province landlocked away from the Russian nation.

.

Russian, and President Putin, were desperate to keep the Ukraine in Russian control, and they ended up with the little tiny Crimea. President Putin won the battle, to loose the war. Not really anything to crow about, and he has now come to President Obama, hat in hand, asking for forgiveness and an end to the crippling sanctions. Bottom line? President Obama won the day, internationally, diplomatically, and for the future of democracy.

.

“Bridgegate’ got a million dollar ‘White-Wash’ a la Governor Christie’s wallet, mayhaps the people of New Jersey will ultimately pay that price. NO interviews are given, no testimony was given, nothing was really investigated and (from what I have read, and heard so far) this was more of a vehicle for personal attacks against two of his favorite people. Don’t be fooled, the real investigation is still underway by; The Legislature of New Jersey, the District Attorney’s Office(s) of the two areas, and a Federal Attorney General’s Office. Those are the investigations that will give us facts and testimony. I can wait… this is not going anywhere, and not going away any time soon.

.

Now, for the topic of this article… My words of warning for all of you, My Dear Readers. Today I saw an article about another company getting hacked and thousands of customer’s card numbers, and other sensitive information, was stolen.

.

The Spec’s warehouse-size superstore… Credit card, debit card and private check information for an estimated half-million or so customers was exposed at 34 of 155 wine and liquor stores owned by Spec’s, including 21 in the greater Houston area, over the past year and a half, the company said Friday.

“The exposure may include customers’ bank routing numbers, card security codes and other payment card and check information.”[1]

.

This data breech affected nearly a half-million customers of this company. The complete scope will be revealed over the coming months. However, this is small potatoes when compared with the major data breech of last year, TARGET. During the holiday shopping season Target was hacked at a historic level.

.

At up to 40 million customers, the breach ranks among the biggest in U.S. corporate history. In 2007, the data of more than 45 million customers was stolen from stores including T.J. Maxx and Marshalls.”[2]

.

Dwarfed by the ‘Crime of the Century’;

.

And in 2011, a hack exposed the credit card information of 100 million user accounts on the Sony PlayStation video game network.”[3]

.

The Target Debacle resulted in every single piece of plastic, in my wallet, being replaced by the end of last year. I didn’t even have to make any requests, as I am a frequent shopper at Target and had used most of all my debit and credit cards at my local Target stores. MY Dear Readers, this is not something on the wane. On the contrary, you can reasonably expect to see this happen more, and more often in the months and years to come.

.

If you are a frequent readers, here at The Other Shoe, then you know that I have started an educational series named ‘The Deep Web’. I started this article series for you, My Dear Readers. You see I understand that most of you have never spent a single moment outside the World Wide Web. Most believe that this part of the internet, is all there is. Far from the truth, as a matter of fact? The Deep Web (aka as ‘The Dark Web’ & “The Spice Road’) is several times larger than the WWW you are familiar. As I explain in my very first edition, the common internet is about 1.5 terabytes is size. Whereas, ‘The Dark Web’ is 7,500 Terabytes in size.

.

Made up of, mostly, ‘White Hats’ and ‘Dark Hats’ this other web is everything you can imagine, and more. I am a “White Hat’ meaning I generally use my computer knowledge for the benefit of others and only engage in writing code for personal use. Conversely, ‘Black Hats’ are all those that seek to use computer knowledge for personal gain, and/or the destruction of virtual realty and wealth. I started learning about computers; learning binary, ‘C’, and other machine and programming languages, in the early 80’s. Actually, I first used a networked computer in 1978 when I played a ‘Star Trek’ based game in a teletype machine via a cradle modem. My father collected teletype machines, starting in 1972. We had two by the time he left the family.

.

Even with my father gone, I continued to work with the teletype machines and taught myself how to connect to early network servers and primitive Bulletin Boards. I just loved all things electronic, and electrical. Computers were a marriage between what I already knew and all new technologies. I continued my studies when I was hired as a answering service operator, in Beverly Hills, that was undergoing a huge upgrade. Upgrading from old cord boards to an electronic switching system and an Hybrid Computer driver Automatic Call Distribution System (ACD). The owner did not know of my pervious electronic and communication experiences until they started the upgrade.

.

Very quickly opportunities presented themselves for me to display my knowledge and understanding. I had already moved up from operator to Morning Shift Supervisor, which gave me ample opportunity to shine. Soon I was going to Answering Service Conventions, Educational Classes at the Manufacture’s Corporate Offices (Star-Tel made the ACD and electronic/Digital switches), and ultimately classes at A.T.&T. offices here in Los Angeles studying Unix.

.

You see, I knew way back in 1983 that the whole future of communications and information was the digital realm. Skills in this area (also known as Kung Foo) would be invaluable in the years and decades to come. Now, I will be the first to admit that my Kung Foo is not so good… kind of dated. However, I have skills enough to warn and to inform. Today I am here to signal a warning to all of you, My Dear Readers.

.

First, I would suggest that you take a look at my series ‘The Deep Web’ right here at The Other Shoe. Now I am not advocating that everyone should surf The Deep Web. On the contrary, unless you have a strong background in information technology I would advise that you stay away from The Deep Web. Many ISP (Internet Service Providers) block access to this part of the web, and some will even discontinue your internet access without warning just for connecting.

.

Blocked access can be circumvented by using bridges (I will be explaining this process and how to use bridges next week in Part Three of ‘The Deep Web’). Although… to be brutally honest? I would suggest that everyone learns as much as you can about this internet, and ‘The Deep Web’. ‘Knowledge is power’[4] (Francis Bacon) is more truthful today, than anytime in history. Many companies that ‘protect your identity’ already check The Deep Web for signs of your; credit card numbers, banking information, social security number and other digital identifiers in order to head off data attacks and identity theft. Yes, My Dear Readers, was are already… there…

.

In preparing readers for engaging with, and surfing, The Deep Web I have outlined practices that are great habits to form, even if you have no intention of ever surfing The Deep Web. They are outlined in Part Two, but I will be reiterating them in upcoming editions of this series, too. Good computing habits are beneficial to everyone and in all situations. I started teaching ‘Good Computing Habits’ back in 1981 to my answering service staff. In our capacity as answering service personnel, we were privy to great deal of; personal information, private data transfers, and sensitive information. Tel-Us, that was/is the name of the service, also provided Telex services, along with answering service, paging, and text transmission of telephone messages. That one was my favorite, and the one service that I sold exclusively.

.

Even in 1983 I could transmit a paper copy of a telephone message to a text printer I installed in your home of office. That way, without anyone calling you on the phone, or disturbing the client, I could forward important or time sensitive messages to a client silently and discreetly. I know, given today’s technology and messaging abilities, it doesn’t sound like much. However, Henry Mancini thought it was a great product and I installed one of our message printers into his home office, personally. The walls of his office were lined with awards, and on the shelves were Oscars and other Academy Awards for his work in soundtracks and the like. Yeah, I really loved that job!

.

My Dear Readers, I want you to keep your eyes on the headlines. Keep watching and mark my words, you will be seeing more and more ‘data breeches’ in the news as the months and years pass. You see, there are huge populations of ‘Black Hat’ hackers in; Russia, China, North Korea and old USSR satellite nations that spend all day every day working to break; firewalls, encryption technologies, data encryption and hardware firewalls in servers. They are raised on this stuff, from a very early age.

.

I was unfortunate enough to, while working as property manager in Westwood, have my identity stolen. I worked with an FBI agent, out of the Westwood office, that worked solely in identity theft and information technology theft-virtual theft. Not only had my identity been stolen, so had a lot of information off of the office computer. Since the company computer had been hacked, corporate executives demanded that I gain all the information I could from this FBI agent.

.

He was the one that enlightened me that there were/are teenage hackers in Russia that spend all night and day doing nothing more than working to steal; credit card numbers, debit card information, banking information, and other sensitive financial information via; phishing, direct computer hacking, and server attacks. These young people are trained, from a very young age, in; computer languages, firewall protocols, encryption technology, and firewall protocols and technology. They are told that the only way they will get out of poverty is if they steal their way out.

.

I want you all to understand the immensity of the problem. How frequent these attacks have become, and how often they are successful. That this problem is only going to get worse, long before it gets better. You see, corporations are insured against these losses to a certain point. However, as a consumer? Your threshold of liability is much higher. Your exposure is far greater. Your losses could be financially crippling, and some could never really recover.

.

Your only defense is; better computer habits, better financial habits, and always be aware when on line. After the Target data breech I received new; debit card (with entirely new information; number, expiration date, security number), credit cards and I was warned in writing to not use my cards inside Target. In the letter it was suggested that I go to a branch bank, withdraw needed funds, and shop with cash at Target “until further notice”. Target was very neglectful in their data practices. They were warned prior to the event, and that is in articles on the web for you to verify.

.

Every single time you swipe your debit card or credit card you take a huge risk. There are even devices that can read credit card information off your card while it is in your wallet. In restaurants there are handheld devices that your server can use to swipe your credit cardand steal all the information that is stored on the magnetic strip. Now, I never let my card out of my sight, when out dining. I try to always shop with cash and only take money out of my account in person in my bank.

.

That is a bit much… for most people. However, I have very limited resources My Dear Readers, and any loss could result in homelessness. Yeah… I live that close to the edge.

.

Today was my ‘Free Day’ here at The Other Shoe. I could take this opportunity to write about anything I wanted. Today, this week, I choose to take the time to sound a warning. A warning to all of you, My Dear Readers, to develop and/or engage in better data practices. Be cautious, as I have explained my current practices with limiting debit/credit card use, make more of a habit of withdrawing money at your bank branch and shop more often with cash. When engaging in purchases and/or financial exchanges on the internet, ALWAYS MAKE SURE you are using a SECURE version of the web site. Look for ‘HTTPS’ up in the URL box at the top of your browser and it should say (in the lower bar) ‘Secure Server’. If you are unsure? CALL their support number and ASK!

.

At home, RUN WEEKLY MALWARE AND ROOTKIT SCANS! Don’t just scan for ‘viruses’ and consider yourself ‘protected’. Here is a very good FREE ‘Malware Scanning Software’ Malwarebuytes[5] (click on that word or use the link below in footnotes). UPDATE this software WEEKLY (at least, I do it EVERY DAY). Also, RUN ‘ROOTKIT’ SCANS WEEKLY (at least). Here are TWO very good – great FREE programs; Malwarebytes-Antirootkit[6], and SOPHOS[7]. Run these scans religiously every week at least, along with your normal weekly Antivirus scans. Once a month, use your Anti-Virus software and run a ‘COMPLETE COMPUTER SCAN’! If your computer has been used by; a friend, a neighbor, a child or grandchild NEVER USE IT for financial transactions or purchasing UNTIL YOU RUN ALL THREE SCANS! (Anti-Virus, Malware and ROOTKIT).

.

I am so sorry if I have scared any of you, My Dear Readers, but these ‘Good Computing Habits’ can protect you, and could (possibly) prevent major financial losses. Check out my series ‘The Deep Web’[8], too. In it I am sharing a lot of ‘Good Computer Habits’ and teaching how to be aware when on line. Developing these good computing habits will benefit you!

.

In closing, My Dear Readers, if EVER I can; be of assistance, provide information, help with a potentially infect computer, provide resources for scanners or removal or ANY data and information references, software suggestions? PLEASE DO NOT HESTITATE TO CONTACT ME! You can leave a message as a comment here at the blogs, you can ‘Friend’ me on Facebook and we can communicate there, or I have left my email several times on this blog. I WILL ALWAYS HELP anyway I can, and it will be my pleasure to help you STAY SAFE!

.

As always I am deeply honored that you come here and read my work.

.

Thank YOU!

.

P.S. My Dear Readers, I have written and presented this article because I CARE! I have GRAVE concerns over the increase of cyber-terrorism… and have this… suspicion that… soon… it will become… much worse. Please exercise caution and read this article as many times as needed… to gain a FULL understanding of this gorwing and dire problem. Take Care! 🙂
