Danny Hanning and Cancer – Day One

Danny Hanning of The Other Shoe – May 6th, 2014

Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. It is not often, in life, that we are faced with… well, ‘Life Changing Events’. Examples of these ‘Life Changing Events’ would be; world news, happenings and events that impact and alter our course in life. A Death in the immediate family, a marriage, a divorce these are just a few examples of ‘Life Changing Events’. Today, I Danny Hanning, experienced one of the most important… and upsetting life events since my head injury of August 25th 1987 ( that day a typewriter dropped on my head and put me in the hospital for nearly a year).

Today I received the results of the biopsy on the “growth” that was removed from the side of my face last Friday (August 1st, 2014). I had hoped and prayed for the best possible news. Many of my close friends and family had prayed for the best possible results, too. Unfortunately, I have the difficult chore of announcing I have been diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma – Stage 3. The lump, that was removed, was what was left of a lymph node, after NHL wrecked the lymph node.

The cancer cells are so large that the sample was designated as “Grade 3B” which equates to a Stage Three cancer. Since I received the report I have been scouring the web for information on Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and the expected results and lifespan. First; there is no ‘cure’ for Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Second; with the best and newest chemotherapy drugs one can expect a lifetime of 12 to 20 years before succumbing to the cancer. Without the newest and best drugs… one can expect a lifetime of between 18 months and three years. Since I have been diagnosed already in stage three, I would fall into the 12-18 month timeframe[1].

I have searched the web to discover that the newest and best chemotherapy drug, for NHL, is rituximab[2]. Unfortunately, according to my research today, this drug is not a ‘covered drug’ by my Part D Medicare Prescription Drug Carrier. That means, in a nutshell, that without help… financial assistance paying for the best/preferred chemotherapy I will be looking at a greatly reduced… lifespan.

My Dear Readers, I really want to be able to afford the drug with the best results and the corresponding extended lifespan. Therefore, just as soon as I am sure that I will have to pay for the rituximab I will start an Indiegogo Campaign to raise the needed funds for my chemotherapy. I have yet to put this campaign together, just as soon as I have I will share that information right here at The Other Shoe. Tomorrow is the day of the week when I usually publish an episode of ‘The Horror in Smithville’. However, My Dear Readers, I am just not feeling up to editing pages I have already written, uploading and preparing, then publishing and promoting. I am very tired… and pretty darn upset and depressed.

I will continue writing and publishing right up until my last breath. As long as I am able to write and publish, I will be right here My Dear Readers sharing the fruit of my labors. As this campaign unfolds I will be using this blog to disseminate information, and promote the fund raising campaign. Therefore, I will be writing each and every day and publishing as many days of the week as is physically possible.

That is about all I have to share, with you My Dear Readers for this the first edition of ‘Danny and Cancer’ here at The Other Shoe. OH! I nearly forgot! IF anyone knows Mr. Jim Thornton? Could you please pass along to Jim my discovery? We have experienced a ‘parting of the ways’ but I am hoping that Jim just might extend an olive branch, considering my current medical status. Thanks!

P.S. I am currently in the process of working out my Indiegogo Campaign for helping with my cancer treatment. It will be called:

Danny’s Cancer Treatment Fund @ Indiegogo

It will run just for 45 days, and I have set the amount for $25,000.00. I understand that is a lot of money, but chemotherapy drugs can cost about $1,200 a WEEK! I am hoping to raise enough money to either purchase of rent a vehicle for me to lift my power chair into and help me to get to chemotherapy and other tests and treatments for my cancer. I welcome ANY suggestions… ideas… and input on this venture.

Quite honestly? I would prefer that someone else would run this campaign. I am going to be under extreme stress and nausea and vomiting from the Chemo. I do not know how I will manage to; write, publish, promote articles, and deal with Chemotherapy and other treatments… TOO! However, nobody has offered to help with this… raising for funds… and I simply must be proactive in my treatment and its costs.

Thank you for your understanding, kindness, and support in this terribly difficult and trying time.

P.P.S –
