NBA GIves Middle Finger to Don Sterling

Welcome back MY Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. My Dear Readers today’s subject is not one I write about, like, at all. However, the past couple of weeks, and the action of the Commissioner of the NBA, have forced my hand. While the Conservative Majority of ACOTUS (Supreme Court of the United States) continues to rule as though racism no longer exists, ‘conservative’ Americans just keep proving racism does exist. I could spend hours and hours presenting proof of all the areas of American life racism is obvious; disproportionate number of African Americans incarcerated in America, ‘Voter ID Laws’ passed to decrease voter participation by minorities, seniors, disabled Americans, and Housing Discrimination. Like the in 2006 where Case Don Sterling chose to pay $3 million in order to avoid prosecution and continue his racist practices.[1]

.

In sworn testimony, one of Sterling’s top property supervisors Sumner Davenport claimed he made racist comments about black people living in one of the buildings he had just acquired:

“That’s because of all the blacks in this building, they smell, they’re not clean. … And it’s because of all of the Mexicans that just sit around and smoke and drink all day.”[2]

.

It was his most recent comments that caused outrage by Clippers players and forced the hand of the NBA Commissioner. It was this weekend that Don Sterling’s remarks to his girlfriend, about Magic Johnson, when she posted an Instagram about Magic Johnson. Here are the comments that came to the surface this weekend.

.

It bothers me a lot that you want to broadcast that you are associating with black people. Do you have to?” Sterling allegedly said.

“You can sleep with (black people). You can bring them in. You can do whatever you want. The little I ask is not to promote it on that … and not to bring them to my games.

“In your lousy … Instagrams you don’t have to have yourself walking with black people.”[3]

.

Now, let’s look at how the talking heads of Conservatives handled these comments. From Rush Limbaugh we have;

.

“This guy is a big Democrat,” Limbaugh insisted. “The only reason he is in trouble right now is that he did not give enough money to Obama.”

Limbaugh went on to say Sterling is “a typical Hollywood Democrat” and a “pretend A-lister.”

“The guy gave money to Gray Davis, the guy gave money to Bill Bradley,” Limbaugh continued. “He’s been donating to Democrat causes … doing what you do in Beverly Hills and LA to be in the A-list crowd, this guy’s been doing it — other than the slum lord business, and that may even be some of what you have to do.”[4]

.

However, according to California State registration roles, Don Sterling is actually registered as a Republican.

.

Don Sterling’s comments do not come in a vacuum, no they come on the heals of the racist remarks by Cliven Bundy. Yes, Cliven Bundy, one time championed by Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh as “A Patriot” and “in the mold of our Founding Fathers”[5].

.

My Dear Readers it is not often that I share my deeply held personal opinions, on this blog. Oh, yes I will share political editorial, and political and social commentary, it is rarely that I present my own personal opinions on our nation. Today, I make a sharp exception right here, right now. My Dear Readers, it is not just that racism is not dead in America, in the twenty-first century, the fact of the matter is?

.

In certain circles, certain walks of life here in America, racism is not only alive and well… it is used as a social barometer for membership in certain social and political organizations. Racism is alive and well in America today. As a matter of fact, we can clearly see that for a certain cross section of our nation, racism is ‘just common sense’. It is accepted like rain in the spring, and snow in the winter. For a (hopefully) small minority of Americans they would turn back the clock and take our nation backwards to a time where racism is institutionalized.

.

My Dear Readers we must all be guardians of dark and hate filled past. It is an unfortunate truth that an injustice forgotten, is an injustice soon to be repeated. That we must judge, harshly, those that would allow or condone the return of racism to our great nation. You can tell by listening to small conversations, and in small places. This is where evils, like racism, are covered is shadows and allowed to flourish and grow. We cannot allow racism to flourish, anywhere. We cannot allow racism to hide in dark corners of our towns, and cities, townships and bumps-in-the-road. It is in these small places that racism can take root, and spread from one generation to another generation.

.

We, all of us My Dear Readers, must work to stamp out racism anywhere, and everywhere it may grow and flourish. We cannot allow American to fall backwards and relive a violent and immoral past. I grew up watching African Americans; have police dogs turned on them for non-violent protest, have fire hoses turned on them for marching for their rights. If we let our guard down just a little bit, we will allow this social disease an opportunity to root, then flourish.

.

‘Unfriend’ them on Facebook, turn away your business from the companies, do not sit and break bread with this ilk. One thing I learned, as a young boy in the Deep South, racism loves making new converts. When racism lives inside a person, it is always seeking out new converts. Racism knows it must spread to survive. Do not let it spread to you.

.

That brings me to the end of today’s editorial article. I had hoped to bring something more to you, My Dear Readers, today. It is just not going to happen. My pain is terrific, and my home is intolerably hot. My A/C is not working, properly, and the maint crew here… well, blows. Hope that tomorrow is cooler. Take care and see you all soon.

Adieu!

.

Thank YOU!

The Mars Report – April 28th, 2014

Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. Today is Monday April 28th 2014, and this is ‘The Mars Report’. Today I will share a duo of unique finds, from the NASA/JPL web site. Our first find is a series of five images from the Martian rover Curiosity’s ‘Right NavCam’ (Navigation Camera). Today at 4:50AM the right navcam captured a meteor falling in the distance. Now, a few eccentric bloggers are (of course) spinning this as so ‘ET’ moment. The evidence is that Curiosity’s diligence was repaid with the capture of a falling celestial body, a meteor. The next five images, below, are the images showing the falling meteor.

.

Well, that was fun. Wasn’t it? I am not convinced that this is ‘an alien dropping to the Martian surface’, and it will take a lot more evidence to convince me of that dubious finding. Moving on, the next image I have for your consideration is a graphic. This graphic shows the purposed pathway to Martian landing by American explorers in the year 2030. The pathway below is are goals outlined in the bipartisan NASA Authorization Act of 2010 and in the U.S. National Space Policy. So, if I manage to live to 73, then I will have lived to see mankind land on the Soon, and Mars! Here’s to me living to 2030!

.

.

Now, My Dear Readers, we come to our final image for today’s edition of ‘The Mars Report’. My Dear Readers, my health is worsening, and it is this fact which determines how much and how often I write and publish. I am no fool, I can clearly see that my traffic is lower than it has been for months. This adds to my depression, but there is little I can do to change this fact. Oh, I can push myself to publish more and more, longer and longer, and end up in a world of pain and suffering. I am pretty sure that nobody wants that outcome.

.

The image, below, is the very first image from Curiosity since its arrival at the ‘Windjana’target location. This is a sandstone rock, and the very first of this type Curiosity has encountered since landing. Now, My Dear Readers, I go to the NASA/JPL ‘Mars Science Laboratory’ web site, daily, looking for new and interesting or entertaining images. Today the site was bereft of such, and I have worked to provide you with some content to digest .

.

Just as soon as Curiosity completes the scientific experiments, I will be sharing (with you My Dear Readers) the science and the images created. I will keep checking back, during the week, and if there is anything new I will post an updated edition of ‘The Mars Report’. Until then, I hope you enjoy the following image of Curiosity’s arrival at ‘Windjana’!

.

.

Well, I have managed to scrounge up some more images for you to enjoy. Each and every day Curiosity transmits, what are called, RAW Images. From these images NASA/JPL refines the ones they deem worthy of media use, or scientific use. Otherwise, they are stored on the web site. Today I have put together some of these RAW images for you to enjoy.

.

Unlike other images I share, there are really no descriptions or science to share, regarding the images. Therefore, I will give you an explanation of where the images were taken, and by which camera. Beyond that, if there is anything I can find to share, I will! Our first RAW image shows a bit of the rover Curiosity and the Martian horizon in the background. Honestly, I look at all of these RAW images, each week, and I really enjoy all the views of the horizon and the Martian surface. I imagine I am on Mars, and looking at the surface and the horizon. It takes me away, for a few moments, from the world of pain and doubt I live in. Here is the first of the three RAW images I have to share.

The next RAW image I have to share is of one of the smaller wheels to Curiosity and the bottom of the MASTCAM. There is none of the horizon, in this image, but you can see a good bit of the rover.

Our final image of the day is another of the Martian horizon as seen by Curiosity. I really like this image. Matter of fact I took this image and adjusted the tilt, cleaned it up a bit and now it serves as my desktop for my computer. I really like Mars, if you couldn’t tell by now. This image was taken on April 24th, 2014 near the ‘Windjana’ sandstone rock, shown above. I could just sit and stare at this image, and several others like it, for hours on end. Hoenstly, it takes me away… to another place… peaceful and quiet… calm.

And, with that, My Dear Readers, we come to the end of yet another edition of ‘The Mars Report’ here at ‘The Other Shoe’. I do hope that you have enjoyed the images I have shared. I do so look forward to your visits… your ‘Likes’ and ‘Shares’. Like I said, earlier, if there is anymore news or science discovered over the week, I will publish another edition of ‘The Mars Report’. Again, thanks for dropping by and have a great week!

.

Thank YOU!

A Week in Review – April 27th, 2014

Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. Things have been off schedule, here at The Other Shoe. The primary blog location, at blog dot com, was gone for three days. Since earlier today I have been working double-time to get everything posted and up to date. MY Dear Readers this is the reason that, later this year, I will be running a funding campaign to move this blog to my own web site.

.

This was a nicely productive week. Including this article I have published eight articles, including the single longest and most exciting episode of ‘The Horror in Smithville’. Weighing in at fourteen pages, last week’s episode was an incredible achievement for a person in my condition. Now for a little preview for the upcoming week here at The Other Shoe.

.

I will be preparing for my quarterly primary doctor’s visit, this week. I am hoping that I can squeeze in; A C.T. Scan, a surgical consult, and a diagnostic visit with my Infectious disease specialist. I know that is a very ambitious schedule, but I simply must go in to next week’s quarterly visit with some news!

.

Now, without further adieu I give you ‘A Week in Review’!

.

  • Sunday Funnies – April 20th 2014 : “Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. If it is Sunday, then it is time for ‘Sunday Funnies’! I am very happy to announce that I do have an all new edition for your viewing pleasure. This week has taken a huge toll on my health. Actually it is the frantic pace of the past seven weeks. Each and every week I have managed to publish between seven and nine articles, without fail.” This week was no exception to that insane schedule. Now, I understand that if I back off this publication schedule, I will loose readers. My health is becoming more important than a number in a box on my web site. My pain had reached levels I have never known before, in my entire life. I have little, if any, time to spend; playing games, visiting with friends or family, RESTING, or any other normal aspect of life. Therefore, I have a feeling that the next two weeks… I will be publishing less frequently. My health and my happiness must come first.
  • The Mars Report – A Decade of Opportunity on Mars : “Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. Today I am pleased to present a short review of a decade of images from the Mars rover, Opportunity. Launched in July of 2003 and landing on the surface of Mars January 2004, both the Opportunity and Spirit rovers have produced images and science, consistently, for the past ten years. NASA/JPL have proved, beyond any doubt, that they can design, build, launch and guide scientific platforms like no other country on earth.” This week I made the Herculean effort to write tributes to the longest serving Martian rover ever! Spirit has gone to a better place, and served several years. On the other hand, Opportunity finished out ten years of service and is set to continue work this Martian spring. This is the tribute to that intrepid rover, Opportunity. I do not know if any of you reading have been here long enough, but I used to write about this rover, long before ‘The Mars Report’ and before Curiosity landed on the Martian soil. I believe in America’s efforts at space exploration. It is my belief that Earth is mankind’s cradle… play pen and that one day, soon, we will leave this earth behind to forge the destiny of our species among the stars.
  • The Mars Report – A Decade of Spirit on Mars : “Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. Today I am pleased to present a short review of a decade of images from the Mars rover, Spirit. Launched in July of 2003 and landing on the surface of Mars January 2004, both the Opportunity and Spirit rovers have produced images and science, consistently, for the past ten years. NASA/JPL have proved, beyond any doubt, that they can design, build, launch and guide scientific platforms like no other country on earth.” The rover, Spirit, gave six years of service to NASA/JPL, America and the human species. Spirit added to; science, Martian image library, and to this (and many other) blog(s), not to mention pushing the science of extraplantery exploration ahead decades. We learned from its life on Mars, we learned from its death on Mars. The rover, Spirit, is no longer working on Mars. It sits, in the last place we gave it commands, waiting for its human creators to join it on the surface of Mars. I really do hope that we don’t make Spirit wait too long.
  • The Horror in Smithville – Part Seven : “The remaining zombie-wolves were now running for the forest. One mistakenly headed to the forest too close to ‘The Tall Man’. The Tall Man then kicked the zombie-wolf. The wolf went up in the air higher than it stood, had to be nearly fifty feet in the air and traveled the distance of two or more football fields! Tommy had never seen anything like that, a wolf being kicked half a mile in distance and nearly fifty feet into the air.” This episode… out of ALL of the previous six… THIS episode had it all! I am very proud of the work I did, on this episode. There is no way I am going to tell you any more… READ, or be left behind.
  • Lost in Space – April 25th, 2014 : “Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. Today I would like to welcome you to another fine edition of the space faring series ‘Lost in Space’! I have some pretty spectacular images, again, from the space telescope Hubble. As well, with each image I will do my best to share information about location, and what it is that we are looking at. However, before we get started today I would like to as just how many of you, My Dear Readers, have taken the plunge?” Two editions of ‘The Mars Report’ and an edition of ‘Lost in Space’ all in one week!? Me thinks that you, My Dear Readers, are a bit spoiled. 😉 This edition of ‘Lost in Space’ has ten links to further reading, six images and one video. You see, this is the frantic pace of which I speak and the one I can no longer continue… unassisted. Since I am unlikely to find myself in the company of someone willing to help me with the blog, I cannot imagine I will be able to continue at this pace much longer. Oh, this edition… right. Nebula and start clusters abound. I pick these images very carefully, and I share links to a lot of further information. I pride myself on not only entertaining, but educating, too. Enjoy!
  • Notes from Behind the Keyboard – April 26th, 2014 : “Welcome My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe & ‘Notes from Behind the Keyboard’. This article series is started to replace the monthly/weekly ‘Personal/Medical Updates’ I have, previously, penned here at The Other Shoe. For the longest time I have really wanted to replace the title of these works, today I stumbled upon the title.” Doctors suck, my health declines, my pain is worse and my depression deepens. There I just saved you reading a whole article. NOT! Well, it would be good if you read, and maybe watched the included video. I did take the time to; write, edit, publish, shoot the video, upload the video and embed the video into the article. I am sorry, My Dear Readers, I am getting tired… my pain is worsening… and I get… depressed.
  • The Republican Party of the 21st Century : “So long as the extremists, the ideologues of the Tea Party that have thrown a monkey wrench into the inner workings of Washington, and labeled intransigence a “political victory” have the Republican Party by the short hairs our nation is at risk. For any democracy that simply cannot get the work of governance done, is a democracy headed for extinction. I have long said that “intransigence must be replaced with compromise” and that as long as “Republicans allow Freshmen Congressmen and Senators control the debate, is like letting the teenager in the house4 control the budget!”” That last bit, the part I quoted of myself? THAT appeared on a broadcast of ‘Face the Nation’ where Mr. Bob Sheiffer used MY WORDS to question Senator Mitch McConnell… and the WORLD heard my voice. If you have never had that happen, heard your own words spoke on a television show… I strongly suggest you try it. It is the single most incredible experience of my life. I have been fortunate enough to have experienced that sensation… twice, both thanks to Mr. Bob Sheiffer. Contrary to the aspersions of my dear brother, my words lead the debate… not echo. I mean no harm to the Republican Party. Actually, quite the contrary is true. The terrible division within the ‘Grand old Party’ is damaging our country. The intransigence in the House, ripples out from D.C and infects every organ and cell of our great nation. The sooner the Republican Party is healed, the sooner our country will find good health. Period.

.

With that, and the publication of this article, I finish out the week with eight articles. My Dear Readers, I want you to take a look at any and all of the above reviewed articles you care. However, if you were to limit yourself to one, I would suggest ‘The Horror in Smithville – Part Seven’. I feel great pride in that work. I feel prideful in what is to come next. The story of Timmy and Archer is slated to continue well into the summer.

.

There is a good chance that the story will be with us, come Halloween. I have so much more for them to experience, and so many more places for these two young lads to further their adventure, and their growth. I hope that you join me, and the other My Dear Readers that have found ‘The Horror in Smithville’ very entertaining, and rewarding.

.

My Dear Readers, I cannot put into words the joy I feel when I see your ‘Likes’ and ‘Shares’. There isn’t a lot that makes me smile, anymore… your kind support… does. The next two weeks will be full of exams, doctor visits, and tests. I do hope to keep writing and publishing, at the same pace. However, I have to be honest and tell you that I am not sure I can keep this mad pace… up.

.

Thank you for coming here, thank you for reading, thank you for your kind words, thank you for sharing. I hope that I being happiness to you, and those you share my work. I hope that I can continue this work for many years to come.

.

Until we meet again, Adieu!

.

Thank YOU!

The Other Shoe's Daniel Hanning

The Other Shoe’s Daniel Hanning 2/2014

The Republican Party of 2014, is there HOPE?

Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. Late in the day, on Wednesday of this week, I wrote an answer to a post of a very good friend on Facebook. Looking back, on this post, I realized that… either due to pain, or overwhelming need of sleep, I had managed to write a synopsis of a problem that has plagued our great Republic for more than a decade. Many times, over the past decade, I have tired and worked tirelessly to put to voice the root of this plague.

.

Either by chance or due to mental awareness unimpeded by restraint, I finally managed to put to voice something I had struggled with before. Below… I am sharing that posting. I do this… because not all of you, My Dear Readers, have me as a friend on Facebook and you might otherwise never see this synopsis of the plague of our great Republic.

.

Read and be informed. Read at your own risk;

.

The great divide, within the Republican party, will be huge fodder for; authors, historians, and writers of all stripes for generations. Let me explain their dynamic, in small words. Billionaires, with political axes to grind, took over the Republican party at the turn of the century. Talking heads, hired and supported by some of said billionaires, flooded airwaves with divisive hyperbolic rhetoric (focus group tested and created). The ‘Radical Right’ started running over moderates alienating any but the ‘converted’. With tens of millions of dollars invested in; redistricting scams, voter suppression and the creation of the ‘Tea Party’. (Yes, there is now proof the tea party was not created by grassroots movements as previously claimed), the Radical Right forced an extremist agenda on a once reasonable and ‘Grand’ party. With the help of the internet, Americans (mostly absent from politics for their entire lives) were drafted and given a ‘voice’. They went to web sites and printed out their ‘talking points’, flooding town meetings in ever state. Within a decade the Republican party was split in twain, when Steele was replaced with Rance Prebius the extreme became the center and American politics saw a huge shift right… In the process the center was lost. Considered debate lost to one-side hyperbolic rhetoric. Compromise became a four lettered word, lines were drawn… in blood. Most non-partisan political watchers… bloggers… writers agree. America is more divided than any time since the Civil Rights movement… or the Civil War. America has lost its ability to reach a consensus. Lost the Unity that was so instrumental to our greatness. The ‘War on Poverty’ and compassion were replaced with overt greed, avarice, and a ‘War ON the Poor’. Since the 20008 recovery 98% of all wealth generated has gone to the top 1-5%. The Middle Class has been more than decimated (to decimate is to reduce by 1/10, and often misused in media). I am one of few Americans with the courage to speak up about the horrible harm… done to our great Republic. WE are ALL guilty…. We LET this happen to the greatest Democracy in human history, handed down to US by the ‘Greatest Generation’. One day… Americans WILL weep at what was lost and what we left them. 2014 Will look and sound like all the past elections. And I will cry.

.

Two points, in this posting, are salient points. First, we cannot, sitting in time where we do today, know how authors and historians will judge today’s political environment. However, if you can take a step away from ourselves, our own political beliefs and agendas, we might catch a glimpse of what will be written… in time. We must learn from the political mistakes of the past (at least) several years.

.

For the very first time in the history of our nation our Congress is gripped with intransigence. I have looked at the records, I have scoured the numbers. The last three sessions of Congress our House of Representatives has been ‘the least productive in history’! There have been years, during the Civil War and during World War Two, there were single years where, either due to the lack of members or sue to too many Representatives serving their country, a single year saw fewer bills passed into law.

.

However, NEVER BEFORE in the history of this great Republic has a Congress, specifically the House of Representatives been so gripped by political ideology that intransigence was so pervasive. Resulting in several sessions in a row being ‘the Least Productive in History’ through no fault of war, or civil unrest. This cannot stand, least America’s democracy fails. Congressmen, elected to serve in the House of Representatives are elected as LAWMAKERS.

.

When these duly elected Representatives fail to be lawmakers and, through the pursuit of political purity, choose instead to be seen as “law repealers” (Spoken by Speaker of the House John Boehner – Face the Nation 2014) we, all Americans, are forced into a crossroads. Shall we allow elected Congressional Representatives to violate the Constitution and their ‘Oath Of Office’ and merely draw a check, and do no work?

.

How, then, will history judge us? Not only will history, time, judge these intransigent and lawless Congressional representatives harshly, will they not truthfully judge us, too, as complacent with their lawlessness? This does not bode well for the continuation of our Constitutional Democracy. If duly elected Congressional Representatives are allowed intransigence by voters, how can our democracy function? Will this not set a precedent, where when ever a group of lawmakers collectively decide to hold the lower House in the grip of political ideology resulting in a democracy plagued by intransigence, will it not fail?

.

We, as a nation, cannot go without the rule of law. Nor can we go for any prescribed period of time without the writing of law, and rewriting of law whose time has passed? Aye, there’s the rub! For even if you are of the mistaken ideal that ‘there are too many laws’ how, then, can you reconcile your inaction with the tides of change the tirelessly flow through our society? Laws expire as the need for them wanes. How, then, can we undo, rewrite or prescribe new, when laws come to a point where their existence does more harm to a society, than good… If there not sufficient lawmakers willing to work to; rewrite, undo, repeal or prescribe new?

.

You see, My Dear Readers, there is where there sophomoric ‘reasoning’ fails horribly, and our great Republic right behind. This is why I bring to bear great arms against this wooly logic proffered by the political ideologists. They may grouse at my methods, they may taunt and insult me (personally) for my “attacks” but it is THEY that are the root of the plague. Why not should I attack, like an antibiotic or an antiviral, the very disease that plagues our great Republic?

.

I leave you with this, I fight against intransigence because I have the foresight to see that it is an attack on our very democracy! I will not stand idly by and allow my nation’s democracy, and the Republic, be attacked without defending with all my will and powers. To all those that would attack America with intransigence and political purity? I give you fair warning; I will take no prisoners I will show no mercy… no quarter! Be yea fair warned.

.

Addendum: Since I first penned this article, I have been catching up on my reading. Seems that the Tea Party is perched to “leave the GOP” as soon as the 2014 elections (just six months away). In state after state, moderate GOP candidates are drawing sistinct lines between themselves and the “radical policies” of their (used to be) Tea Party brethren. In Kentucky sitting Republican Senator Mitch McConnell (minority leader in the Senate) has brought his huge ‘War Chest’ to bear against is Tea Party primary contender. Matching his rhetoric with his actions Senator McConnell has issued a threat to all those Tea Partiers that would ‘primary’ mainstream GOP candidatures. Saying:

.

The goal is to deny them any Senate primary victories, cut into their fund-raising and diminish them as a future force in Republican politics. “I think we are going to crush them everywhere,” Mr. McConnell, the Senate Republican leader, said in an interview, referring to the network of activist organizations working against him and two Republican incumbents in Kansas and Mississippi while engaging in a handful of other contests. “I don’t think they are going to have a single nominee anywhere in the country.[1]

.

It is my (informed) opinion that IF (and that is a BIG ‘IF’) the GOP/Republican mainstream can surgically remove the Tea Party Cancer? It would be the single greatest achievement by Republicans (Mainstream Republicans and Moderate Republicans) in the past decade! Quite honestly the Tea Party is the reason that Republicans have yet to gain a majority in the Elder Congressional body, in contrast to holding the majority in the Lower House for three elections.

.

Further, IF the BOP can be successful in quashing all Tea Party primary entries, and replace Reince Priebus with… say, Michael Steel? That would signal the single greatest stabilization of the party, and a rebirth of the Grand Old Party. It is no secret that the Tea Party (lead and created by billionaires like the Koch brothers and other billionaire political amateurs) has cost the Republican party; TWO Presidential elections, the Majority in the Senate and THREE terms of the “Least Productive Congress in History”.

.

If the Tea Party were a single player, say, on a baseball team? They would have been cut from the team some time ago. Like this nutcase in Nevada, what’s his name… Cliven Bundy? You know, the nutcase that (until two days ago) Sean Hannity (at Fox) had crowned as the poster child for state’s rights, and “like the Founding Fathers”? Well, now Sean Hannity is doing just about anything (short of actually admitting the mistake he made, out of political expedience) to distance himself from Cliven Bundy, post racist remarks against African Americans.

.

SEE, right there that is the problem with the Tea Party and those (politically uninformed, or political rhetoric parrots) that make up the vocal part of the Tea Party. From “I’m not a witch” to this week’s “African Americans were better off as slaves” the kind of people that are self-described Tea Party members are generally unelectable. That is a fact that has cost the mainstream of the Republican Party dearly! I genuinely hope that the core of the Republican Party, the moderates that guided the party prior to the ‘Invasion of the Body Snatchers’ that was the ‘Tea Party Movement’, can remove the cancer. I hope that the Grand Old Party can be brought back to its former glory, take a stand in the ‘Center-Right’ of the political debate and begin again making compromises so that government can work!

.

So long as the extremists, the ideologues of the Tea Party that have thrown a monkey wrench into the inner workings of Washington, and labeled intransigence a “political victory” have the Republican Party by the short hairs our nation is at risk. For any democracy that simply cannot get the work of governance done, is a democracy headed for extinction. I have long said that “intransigence must be replaced with compromise” and that as long as “Republicans allow Freshmen Congressmen and Senators contorl the debate, is like letting the teenager in the house4 control the budget!” That quote, of mine, is from ‘Face the Nation’ and Bob Schieffer asked it of Senator Mitch McConnel, ironic that now he is trying to stop the Tea Party from winning any Republican primaries.

My Dear Readers, any thinking person can clearly come to the understanding that intransigence is no replacement for compromise, and that parroted hyperbolic rhetoric s no replacement for informed debate. PERIOD! I am just glad that someone finally took my advice and are ready to jettison the dead weight of the Tea Party. Kudos to Senator Mitch McConnel!

.

As always I am deeply honored that you come here and read my work.

Notes from Behind the Keyboard – April 26th, 2014

.

Daneil Hanning of The Other Shoe 2001

Daneil Hanning of The Other Shoe 2001

.

Welcome My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe & ‘Notes from Behind the Keyboard’. This article series is started to replace the monthly/weekly ‘Personal/Medical Updates’ I have, previously, penned here at The Other Shoe. For the longest time I have really wanted to replace the title of these works, today I stumbled upon the title.

.

Little, as far as content, will be changed. However, today I have a little tale of courage and faith to share. Hopefully, I will have one of those to tell, on a regular basis. As you may well have noticed, I have recorded and published a short companion video with this edition of “Notes…’. I have wanted to get behind the camera, again, for the past several weeks. Not that I have any great revelation to share, just to say “Hello” face-to-face, as it were.

.

First, doctors suck. I am still waiting for the results of one blood test. It simply must be complete, prior to the C.T. scan with contrast. Seems I will be spending a lot of time, next week, hounding my new doctor. Just as soon as I have the C.T. scan complete, I will relay any known results, just as soon as I have them.

.

Next, I am genuinely flattered by the obvious success of ‘The Horror in Smithville’. My Dear Readers, not since ‘The Story of Daniel’ have I placed so much of myself, into a work. Even when I am not behind the keyboard, I am working on ‘The Horror…’ in my mind. Working out plot lines, character development, and crisis points. Until the moment the boys are finally home, safe and sound, at the end of their adventures? I will be working on this piece.

.

My health? What can I say, at this very moment I am in terrible pain, in my neck. I awake to pain, pain is my companion is sleep. My days and nights are filled with pain. It is my constant companion, till death do us part. I hope to see a couple of doctors, over the next weeks. I hope to have a “growth” removed from the side of my face. I hope to find out why I have fevers, nearly daily, and am so very tired and drained all the time. I am not holding my breath.

.

Now, for the tale I have to tell. Thursday, of this week, Allen took a trip to the nearby Target to purchase some items I was of need. The Target is on the other side of the freeway, from home. It is a walk of about four to five city blocks. Now, My Dear Readers, I live in rural Orange County. Well, it is more suburban than actual rural… but you get my point. I moved here from urban Los Angeles. Where your feet never touch the earth, life is a journey from concrete to concrete.

.

Being suburban to rural we see wildlife here, from time to time. Our journey to my bank, takes us past the local Community College. Directly across the street from the college is a large open field. Home to many wild rabbits. Most likely, then were pets released from captivity, to the pseudo-wild by disgruntled owners. They are wonderful to see, and quite relaxed around humans.

.

Well, as I was saying, Allen was on a foot journey to the local Target when he came to a very busy intersection here on Beach Blvd. Beach is a very busy north/south passage boulevard with three to four lanes going each direction. Allen was going south, on Beach, when he came across the most heart wrenching sight!

.

Sitting, confused… dazed… in the far right lane of traffic… just inches from being crushed by waves of traffic, was a lost and old… mole rat. Now, I am not sure what kind of rat Allen saw, I was not there, and I take him at his word. It had a very short tail, a brown and blackish coat and was quite old.

.

As I said, it was in the street… in the middle of a lane of traffic on Beach blvd. It was lost and very confused, and was going to get run over and killed if someone didn’t stop and help her. So, Allen, the man with the big heart that he is; stepped out into traffic! Then, he signaled all the cars to stop while he shepherded the; old, tired and confused mother mole-rat off the busy boulevard and into some bushes nearest the street. At one point, she was unable to get up into the sidewalk Allen actually reached down and picked up the mole-rat to place her in a quite and safe place.

.

He told me that; she was very nice… but got slightly upset with Allen when he went to pick her up. She did not try to bite Allen, but barked and snarffed at him, squirming in his hands to be let down on to the sidewalk. Once Allen had finished getting the old and confused mole-rat into the neighboring bushes? Allen was meet by cheers and applause from passing motorists and some people standing in line at a local roach-coach. (Those food vans that frequent malls and construction sites). Yes, many people applauded Allen for his act of kindness, once the mole-rat was safely in some bushes.

.

Once Allen told me his tale, I too applauded his actions, his kind and gentle heart and the courage it took to step into traffic to save a life. For, to me, all life is precious. Even a lowly mole-rat’s life is of value and should be protected. I am very proud of Allen.

.

Well, My Dear Readers, that is going to about wrap it up for me. Now… my pain is increased and I am getting very nauseous. That is happening all too often, as of late. So, I simply must rest and see if I can get this nausea to pass… and maybe find so relief from this terrible pain.

.

I want to Thank YOU all for dropping by, today. For taking a few moments out of your busy day to spend with me. “Thank you!”

.

Until we meet again, Adieu!

 .

Lost in Space – April 25th, 2014

Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. Today I would like to welcome you to another fine edition of the space faring series ‘Lost in Space’! I have some pretty spectacular images, again, from the space telescope Hubble. As well, with each image I will do my best to share information about location, and what it is that we are looking at. However, before we get started today I would like to as just how many of you, My Dear Readers, have taken the plunge?

.

The plunge into the horror series, right here at The Other Shoe, ‘The Horror in Smithville’. We are now in our SEVENTH week of this terribly entertaining, and suspenseful, serial horror story. In just a matter of a couple of months this horror series has captured the hearts, and minds, of hundreds of readers. Join us, each and every Thursday, as Timmy and Archer; battle zombie-wolves, stare down ‘The Tall Man’ and take on everything my imagination can throw at them. This run away favorite of you, My Dear Readers, is just getting started. Isn’t it about time that you made a little time, each Thursday, for this incredibly popular and suspenseful horror series?

.

Now that we are through with the commercial break, let’s get back to the stars! As with every week I have a batch of incredible images from the Hubble space telescope. Our very first image, for this week’s edition, comes from the El Goro Galaxy Cluster[1]. ‘El Goro’ is Spanish for ‘The Fat One’ and this galaxy cluster lives up to that name. Only a mere 9.7 billion light years from Earth, this cluster has a mass nearly 3 billion times that of our sun, Sol. The immense size of this galaxy cluster was first reported in January 2012 by scientists at NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory. I picked this image because it reminded me of something I saw as a young boy.

.

.

Our next image comes from the constellation Leo and is of the galaxy known as NGC 3455[2]. The image is of a barred spiral galaxy roughly 65 million light years from earth. It was discovered, and this image was taken, April 14th, 2014. There you go, My Dear Readers, I am keeping you abreast of the newest news in the Hubble discovery universe! Finally, here is a little of the science behind the image, straight from NASA’s web site; “Barred spiral galaxies account for approximately two thirds of all spirals. Galaxies of this type appear to have a bar of stars slicing through the bulge of stars at their center. The SB classification is further sub-divided by the appearance of a galaxy’s pinwheeling spiral arms; SBa types have more tightly wound arms, whereas SBc types have looser ones. SBb types, such as NGC 3455, lie in between.”[3]

.

Moving right along, My Dear Readers, our next stop is in the Tarantula Nebula[4] (also known as 30 Doradus, or NGC 2070). A mere 160,000 light years from earth, a walk in the park by Hubble standards, this nursery for the stars contains (roughly) 800,000 stars in various stages of formation. You just gotta love those nebula! So much science is contained in a nebula like the Tarantula that Hubble has created the Hubble Tarantula Treasury Program’[5] to gather and catalog it all. Now, on with the iamge!

.

Let’s keep moving, My Dear Readers, there is another tour group hot on our heels! The next image is brought to us by Messier 83[6]. A big favorite of armature astronomers (there is even a rock band named M83…). A mere 15 million light years away, in the constellation of Hydra[7] this wondrous sight is also known as ‘The Southern Pinwheel’. At roughly 50,000 light years across thisbarred spiral galaxy is home tohundreds of thousands of stars, Ghosts of dead stars called supernova remnants, and stars in all different states of life.

.

Moving right along… let’s pick up the pace, back there at the end of the tour line… we don’t have all day, we have an absolutely fantastic image. This image is reminiscent of a Holiday Wreath, with the center of the wreath the brightest star RC Puppis[8]. RC Puppis is a Cepheid variable star in the constellation of Puppis. This star pulsates in a six week cycle where it will dim, then build up the luminosity we see in the image below. At its highest point of luminosity it is 15,000 times brighter than our sun, Sol.

.

Our final image, for the day, comes to us from the galaxy ESO 137-001[9]. Another barred spiral galaxy it is located in the start cluster known as Abell 3627[10] (also known as Norma Cluster). This image is of a cluster of galaxies roughly 200 million light years from earth. The Norma Cluster appears zooming to the upper right of this image. Yes, it is the ghost-like spiral blue near the top right of the image. As a special treat just below the static image, just for you My Dear Readers, is a video from NASA/JPL just about this image and the heading. ENJOY!

.

.

Well, My Dear Readers, that brings us to the end of another great edition of ‘Lost in Space’ right here at The Other Shoe. I hope that everyone has enjoyed the wonderful images. As well, I want you to be aware that there is a huge amount of science contained in these articles. Just follow any of the nine links (at the bottom of the article) to the accompanying articles about the galaxies and nebula contained within this article.

.

Yes, I do go the extra mile for you, My Dear Readers. I really wish that I had a telescope… and lived in a place where all the stars are wiped clean from the sky by background light pollution. Yes, for the past twenty-seven years I have lived in the Los Angeles basin. Once there, all the stars in the sky are wiped clean and replaced with, airplanes and helicopters. I remember my first week here, living in Hollywood, I just couldn’t sleep at all because of the constant noise of police helicopters and the irritating background light pollution. Again, enjoy this trip through the heavens, this walk among the stars, brought to you by Yours Truly each and every week, right here at The Other Shoe.

.

Adieu!

Thank YOU!

The Mars Report – A Decade of Spirit on Mars

Spirit Selfie Still Shining After All This Time

(Spirit Selfie Still Shining After All This Time)

.

Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. Today I am pleased to present a short review of a decade of images from the Mars rover, Spirit. Launched in July of 2003 and landing on the surface of Mars January 2004, both the Opportunity and Spirit rovers have produced images and science, consistently, for the past ten years. NASA/JPL have proved, beyond any doubt, that they can design, build, launch and guide scientific platforms like no other country on earth.

.

Today, I am going to continue this series with the Spirit rover. The Spirit rover launched on June 10th, 2003 from Cape Canaveral. Spirit landed, on the Martian surface, on January 4th, 2004. Spirit finally succumbed to a winterin 2010. Spirit’s back wheels were caught in sand, leaving Spirit in a bad position to weather the winter. Granted, today the rover Curiosity overshadows these twin rovers… even here at The Other Shoe.

.

Let me take us all the way back to the day Spirit landed in the Gusev crater, a 170 km diameter crater which formed three to four billion years ago. Below is an image, taken by Spirit, directly after leaving the ‘nest’. Unlike Curiosity, Opportunity and Spirit landed in huge ‘air bag’ landing devices. Once in the Martian atmosphere the rover package was jettisoned and air bags, surrounding the rover(s), deployed. They rolled until all the inertia was dissipated. Once halted, the air bags deflated and the rovers rolled out on to the Martian surface. Directly below is the ‘nest’ of air bags left behind by the Martian rover Spirit.

.

.

Spirit began seeing dust devil activity around the beginning of Mars’ spring season. Activity increased as spring continued, but fell off again for about two weeks during a dust storm. As the dust storm faded away, dust devil activity came back. In the mid-afternoons as the summer solstice approached, dust devils were a very common occurrence on the floor of Gusev crater. Directly below is a still image of dust devils taken by Spirit’s main camera.

.

For our next image, Spirit acquired this high-resolution view of intricately layered exposures of rock while parked on the northwest edge of the bright, semi-circular feature known as “Home Plate.” Spirit acquired this false-color image at 11:48 local true solar time on Mars on the rover’s 746th Martian day, or sol (Feb. 26, 2006), after using the rock abrasion tool to brush the surfaces of rock targets informally named “Stars” (left) and “Crawfords” (right).

Our next image is a larger view of the area included in the image above. Taken by Spirit’s Mast-camera, it is also a ‘false-color’ image. Showing the colors of the rocks and land as they would appear in ‘Earth Light’. This image was used, by NASA/JPL, to pick the location to use the abrasion tool on this rock face.

.

The following image, directly below, was (when taken) the “single largest yet acquired by either Opportunity of Spirit” and that is the reason I have included it in today’s review. The panoramic camera on NASA’s Mars Exploration Rover Spirit took the hundreds of images combined into this 360-degree view, the “Husband Hill Summit” panorama. The images were acquired on Spirit’s sols 583 to 586 (Aug. 24 to 27, 2005), shortly after the rover reached the crest of “Husband Hill” inside Mars’ Gusev Crater.

.

Our next image is of a rock called “Clovis,” the rock abrasion tool on NASA’s Mars Exploration Rover Spirit cut a 9-millimeter (0.35-inch) hole during the rover’s 216th Martian day, or sol (Aug. 11, 2004). The hole is the deepest drilled in a rock on Mars so far. This false-color view was made from images taken by Spirit’s panoramic camera on sol 226 (Aug. 21, 2004) at around 12:50 p.m. local true solar time — early afternoon in Gusev Crater on Mars. To the right is a “brush flower” of circles produced by scrubbing the surface of the rock with the abrasion tool’s wire brush. Scientists used rover’s Moessbauer spectrometer and alpha particle X-ray spectrometer to look for iron-bearing minerals and determine the elemental chemical composition of the rock. This composite combines images taken with the camera’s 750-, 530-, and 430-nanometer filters. The grayish-blue hue in this image suggests that the interior of the rock contains iron minerals that are less oxidized than minerals on the surface. The diameter of the hole cut into the rock is 4.5 centimeters (1.8 inches).

.

.

Our final image, for this review of the (near) decade of Spirit’s life on the Martian surface is of Columbia Hills as it begins it approach. It was on this very approach that, unfortunately, Spirit encountered a “sandy patch” area and NASA/JPL lost control of the rear wheels. This is where Spirit remains, to this day, with its rear wheels caught in a large patch of sandy material. Spirit was not prepared for the oncoming winter weather, positioned poorly, the electronic devices and controls did not survive the winter.

.

Spirit Columbia Hills Approaching the Hills

(Spirit Columbia Hills Approaching the Hills)

.

That brings us to the end of this review of the life of the Martian Rover, Spirit. Lasting far longer than the originally planned ninety days, Spirit added significantly to the science and understanding of Mars and the Martian surface. It is my opinion that the rovers, Sprit and Opportunity, are real and substantial proof that America can be an international leader in space exploration. That, if given the proper financial support… and social support, there is no limit to what NASA/JPL and the America people can do in space.

.

Thank you, My Dear Readers, for joining me these past two days for this review of the two hardest working and historic exploration rovers in the history of mankind. Be sure to keep watching and reading ‘The Mars Report’ as I continue to follow the Martian rover Curiosity as it increases our understanding of extra planetary environments, adds to the volumes of images, and makes more and more scientific discoveries. Mars holds more secrets than any of us can imagine, and may even hold materials… base elements that could be used for many and varied purposes. Even as the insulation material chip manufacturers desperately need to break the 4GHz speed limit in desktop processors.

.

Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. Today I am pleased to present a short review of a decade of images from the Mars rover, Opportunity. Launched in July of 2003 and landing on the surface of Mars January 2004, both the Opportunity and Spirit rovers have produced images and science, consistently, for the past ten years. NASA/JPL have proved, beyond any doubt, that they can design, build, launch and guide scientific platforms like no other country on earth.

.

Today, I am going to start with the Opportunity rover launched on July 3rd, 2003. Opportunity landed, on the Martian surface, on January 24th, 2004 at Meridiani Planum. Opportunity is still roving and still sending incredible images, and making scientific discoveries. Granted, today the rover Curiosity overshadows these twin rovers… even here at The Other Shoe.

.

Our first image is a selfie of Opportunity right before, and after, windstorms cleaned Opportunity. This image was kind of large, I did my best to reduce the size, without damaging the detail or look of this great image.

.

But, I get ahead of myself. Let me take us all the way back to the day Opportunity landed in the Meridiani Planum on Mars. Below is an image, taken by Opportunity, directly after leaving the ‘nest’. Unlike Curiosity, Opportunity and Spirit landed in huge ‘air bag’ landing devices. Once in the Martian atmosphere the rover package was jettisoned and air bags, surrounding the rover(s), deployed. Our next iamge was taken via the PanCam (Panoramic Camera). This image shows ‘Botany Bay’ in the foreground and ‘Solander Point’ in the background. Botany Bay is a topographic saddle that shows exposed sedimentary rocks making up the ‘Burns Formation’. The ‘Burns Formation’ was explored and imaged earlier in the Opportunity mission.

Our next image looks like a field of blueberries, on the surface of Mars. Wouldn’t it be amazing to find blueberries on Mars? That not being the case, what we actually have is a field of hematite-rich spherules, which appear blue. This image was taken by the Opportunity rover in Eagle Crater landing site. This image was the very first scientific proof of flowing water on the surface of Mars. This is one of the ‘Top 50 Images’ from Opportunity as decided by the Smithsonian ‘Air and Space Museum’.

Our next image is the very first large panoramic image for this edition of ‘The Mars Report’ today. This image was taken from Opportunity of Intrepid Crater. The crater was named after the lunar module of Apollo 12, Intrepid. The image was taken back in December of 2010.

.

Thanks for dropping by and taking this look back and review of a decade of images from Opportunity. I am working on another special edition for tomorrow showcasing the rover Spirit. I am going to do my best to, also, bring you the regularly scheduled edition of ‘Lost in Space’ this week, too. Have a great week!
